Pros

There are many excellent workers here, with great attitudes. VMware is consistently on the leading edge of technology, and is always improving its products and has rightly earned the position of being the de facto standard in IT infrastructure virtualization. Pay and benefits are top notch.

Kontras

The rate of organizational change is overwhelming. I'm on my fifth boss in less than three years. The one who hired me was simply excellent, and was one of the best bosses I ever had. Sadly, the last three were among the bottom 10% of all my bosses. My current boss does not respond to phone calls or emails, and no one is able to schedule meetings with her on a timely basis. When she does finally meet with us, she does 90% of the talking, most of which is merely a re-hash of what she knows about the situation but with no new insight or leadership provided. Essentially, she is all talk, and has developed a reputation among other executives as being uncooperative and just doing things on her own. Finally, there is too much internal competition and politics where there should be teamwork and cooperation. People view it as a badge of honor if they do someone else's job, causing total chaos. There are routine "land grabs" by various directors and VPs, and of course, from people at Dell who seem to have nothing better to do. Sadly, this seems to be the norm at VMware.

Pros

VMware is a big company but in many ways had a startup vibe. That was great because the resources and infrastructure of a big company were there, but it gave most people I worked with freedom to work on many projects, influence, move around, and contribute in many ways. Plus, many things moved faster than they might at other companies of the same size. Perks were really great including bonuses, events on the campus, opportunities, etc.

Kontras

The biggest con is the annual layoff. During most of the years I was there, we were growing like crazy, beating expectations, gaining in stock price, etc. It was always positive and upward. However, every single January, it was known that there would be a round of layoffs, even when all numbers were looking great as they almost always were. Management called it restructuring. But, over the years, some really good people were let go for no apparent reason. Then to add insult to injury, a week or two later, there would be a company quarterly meeting discussing how VMware was doing so well and is still hiring, but they had to make some changes. It always felt dishonest and the sympathy for those let go came across as disingenuous.
