LACK. OF. DIVERSITY. The longer I work here, the most I realize Shopify has a horrifying diversity issue. We live in one of the most culturally/ethnically rich and diverse countries in the world, yet for some reason - Shopify loves to hire predominantly white people. And it's extremely troubling. I feel more like a "minority" at Shopify then I do walking down the street. And before you can come up with a perfect PR answer, or flat out deny this, here is just one example: I looked at the employees in one department and it was 301 white employees vs. 104 people of colour (only 3 of which are black, by the way). That's more than double. Going through all the departments, it appears that this is a recurring theme in almost every. single. department. How is this acceptable? How do you expect and promote diversity, if your hiring team is so predominantly white? Whether subconscious, intentional or not - racial biases DO exist in the workforce, and a lot of people of colour miss out on opportunities as a result. How do you expect your employees to feel comfortable reaching out to HR for help, in the event they experience racial microaggressions, hear other employees saying racist things, when their are HARDLY any people of colour to turn to? I don't even feel confident in speaking up against the casual racism I hear, because I am literally surrounded by only white people who have no possible way of understanding the weight of what they say, and how harmful these things are. There are many instances where I don't feel comfortable going to HR or saying, "this isn't right."

Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts - it means a lot to our team. Diversity in tech is an important issue. We know we have a lot of room to grow in this space. In full transparency, your review really hit hard and brings even more awareness to this fact. For that reason, it’s not about sharing a perfect PR answer, but to hold an honest conversation around this and to share some of the efforts we’re making around inclusion at Shopify. In June, we hired a Manager of Inclusion to formalize efforts here and to improve our strategy and efforts around diversity in all its elements. This fall, we’re rolling out company-wide inclusion training, the creation of an inclusive curriculum for our leads, and a company-wide inclusion survey that will highlight teams lacking essential dimensions of diversity including racial/cultural diversity. We’ll use that information to better understand where we’re at as a company and how to better target our racial/cultural diversity efforts. We are launching this survey in the coming weeks and we encourage you to provide feedback using the anonymous feedback form embedded in the survey itself. In addition, conversations with HR partners are confidential and an opportunity to share more about what you’re hearing. Again, we appreciate your review as we know improvements around diversity will contribute to Shopify continuing to be a great place to work. - Brit (SVP of HR @ Shopify)

Pros

- Kind and talented co-workers - Generous AI token spend - Fairly transparent company (has been getting less transparent over the years) - Lots of opportunity for impact

Kontras

- Product management discipline is quite lacking since the new CTO joined - Microsoft culture is adding more chaos and stress, and causing projects to actually go slower - Managers are afraid to tell the truth to Mikhail about the loopholes in engineering; they just want to look good, so they rush their teams to ship crap - Top engineering leaders are moving out of management roles or leaving the company - Tobi used to be far more involved in ensuring a high engineering bar, but seems to have handed over the reins to the new Microsoft regime
