Pros

- Big push for professional and personal development - Management is understanding if personal/family emergency arises - Good work/life balance - Recently increased maternity/paternity leave - Good match % for 401k - Good donation matching and community service options - Working in downtown Boston in a fancy building has its perks

- Colleagues care more about the work/life balance than doing rewarding and challenging work - Lack of promotion and project opportunities for technical roles. For example, if you have a PhD or even a Masters in a technical subject, management doesn't really have advanced enough projects for you. Unless you are lucky and get a spot on a very technical team, but there are not many of those. - Data quality issues - I guess this can be a pro and a con, but Liberty has a lot of reorg's. I want to believe that adjusting how we are structured will help us be more nimble, but at the same time there is little advance notice of changes which can be frustrating. Projects that you may have worked on for months or even years can get scraped. - Pay is not competitive - Tuition reimbursement could be better - We are transitioning to "Flex Space." In other words, they are dismantling our cubes and creating an open floor plan for all employees. Only upper-level management get to keep their offices. You have to book a desk before you get into the office and pack away all your things (keyboard, mouse, laptop, etc.) into a locker before leaving everyday. The reason for this is explained in the next bullet. - There is a huge emphasis on expenses right now. Less holiday parties (depending on the department), lunches, and moving to Flex Space will allow them to fit more employees on a floor and potentially sell/rent out one of our Boston buildings.

Started my career at Liberty Mutual as a Workers' Compensation intern. In the beginning, everything was going well. The workload was demanding, but I genuinely enjoyed the job and the work I was doing. One year later, I got promoted to claim adjuster. Things changed after my manager was seriously injured in a car accident. The department director took over managing our team, and the work environment became completely different. She was extremely rude and practiced excessive micromanagement. She expected me not to take any PTO if my work wasn't completely finished, even when I needed time off because my grandmother had suddenly passed away. The constant pressure and lack of empathy took a serious toll on my mental health. I developed depression during that time and eventually had to seek help from a psychologist. In the end, I decided to leave Liberty Mutual. It was one of the best decisions I made for my well-being, and I would not consider returning to the company.
