When Manuel Sharpe began working at Richland Hospital in 1975, there was one main hospital, a mental health building and a big, empty field. Now the campus fills 90 acres, and his team in Engineering is responsible for nearly 20 buildings. The department recently helped him celebrate 50 years of uninterrupted service to the hospital campus. The best part of the job? Hands down, he said, what keeps him coming to work every day is the people he works with. “We help each other with whatever we need. We’re close-knit as a department because when we have an issue, we just get together and take care of it.” Another piece of joy he finds at work: the patients. “That’s one of the reasons I’m here, to make it better for the patients. I may go into a patient’s room and they’re down, and I talk to them. And some patients are lonely being in a room by themselves. Just about every person in Engineering feels that way. We are here for the patients.” When he came to work at Richland 50 years ago, “I was a mechanical technician – I did HVAC work, steam work, boilers, chillers, any type of pump systems. I had to know a little bit of everything.” A lot has changed, especially technology (“everything’s on the computer now”), but, he said, it all goes back to the same thing: “You still have to pump. You still have to rebuild. You still have to put in systems.” Congratulations on this major milestone, Manuel! #PrismaHealthProud
