Meet Monica! Monica started her Gates career in 1998 as a sales assistant and is now the Director of Sales in First Fit for Gates Mexico. Becoming the first woman director of Gates Mexico, Monica felt honored to be leading the way for women. She said, “It’s about transcendence. Ask yourself, what will your legacy be? When you retire, what will you have left to the new generations?” Monica is always working towards having a positive impact not only in our organization, but with her team, clients, family, and country. What she likes most about Gates is that you can build a meaningful career, saying, “Gates has given me the opportunity to grow professionally, has trusted me with big projects, and has rewarded me for my accomplishments. My work life here has given me a wonderful personal life, too.” Monica has a degree in Chemical Engineering from the Universidad Iberoamericana, and holds a master’s degree in International Business Management from Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM). Meet Shu! Since joining our team in 2016, Shu has taken on various roles within the Legal Department, and currently serves as the Compliance Manager on the Legal Compliance Team. Her dedication lies in designing, implementing, and administering robust global legal compliance programs to ensure that integrity and ethical standards remain paramount at Gates. One of Shu's standout projects involved revamping Gates’ third-party due diligence process. This process allows Gates to strategically, effectively, and efficiently address trending risk areas in its global business. When asked what she enjoys most about her work, Shu attributed it to the engaging and collaborative team environment, fostered under the leadership of our Chief Legal Officer who actively nurtures development opportunities. Shu also appreciates the opportunity to get involved in founding the first Gates Pan-Asian Leadership (PALS) business resource group, promoting diversity, equity and inclusion, employee empowerment, and community engagement in the company. Shu holds a bachelor’s degree from East China Normal University in Shanghai and master’s degrees from University of Denver. Her diverse experience in educational management, strategic human resources, and business administration have equipped her to craft creative and effective compliance strategies. Shu's advice? "Dare to step out of your comfort zone. You'll unlock a world of opportunities and conquer challenges you never thought possible."
With the latest Discover Program milestone session, Making High-Quality Decisions, we're equipping our team with the tools and support they need to make and implement decisions effectively.
Meet Tony! He grew up in a car-fanatic household, making him a curious person constantly interested in understanding how things work. Tony decided to study Mechanical Engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder, and after graduation, he was hired as a Gates application engineer. Now, as Chain-To-Belt Engineering Manager, he designs our custom-made belt drives for our customers’ diverse applications. Tony is familiar with virtually every industry we support, each one presenting exciting and new challenges for him and his team to solve. From small medical devices to large industrial conveyors, rock crushers, and mud pumps. The constant changes in the industries he focuses on motivate him, as he considers these opportunities to spark his curiosity and push the boundaries of what’s possible. During the pandemic, when hospitals started running out of ventilators, companies needed to produce new ones quickly. Tony helped design and manufacture quality ventilators on a scale large enough to meet the unprecedented demands. He said, “That has been the most rewarding project I’ve done.” Around the office, Tony is known for his “making it happen” attitude. He’s constantly encouraging his team to try new ideas, knowing that some may fail because that is how innovation happens, saying, “If you’re not failing, you’re not trying hard enough.” A piece of advice from Tony, “It is not the smartest person who’s the most successful, but the most driven.”
Congratulations to our newly certified Development Dimensions International trainers in our North America region! The group participated in multiple workshops that focused on improving their essential skills, enhancing their facilitation mastery by learning and practicing key competencies. They received expert guidance, observing their Gates master trainer in action, and received one-on-one training. Additionally, they engaged in hands-on practice by facilitating leadership modules and receiving personalized feedback. It's this spirit of constant growth that drives us forward.
Meet Alizée! In 2021, she applied to join the HR team in our Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region. The day she was offered the position, she learned she was pregnant. She wanted to take the job but was nervous to share her news with the recruiter. To her surprise, her pregnancy did not affect her job offer. “It doesn't happen to all the moms out there, to experience that. To not be discriminated against because you're pregnant, to not be discriminated because you're a young mom.” When she returned in October of 2022, she focused on looking for improvement opportunities, such as the standardization of job postings. Alizée’s hard work gained her a promotion to Talent Acquisition Manager, shortly after returning from maternity leave. In this new position, she used her research to implement the right processes and improved her team’s workflow and results. What Alizée likes most about her job is being a part of the change at Gates. She said, “knowing that we all have an important role to play to make this company better is great, because that is what makes the job interesting. I’m not a robot doing the same thing day after day. I’m creating my own work, making a difference, and seeing the results of my efforts.” Outside of work, Alizée loves to spend time with her family. She appreciates the small and big moments she shares with them, including her daily commute when she rides her two daughters to daycare on her Tern GSD bike, which has a Carbon Drive belt systems.
