Pros
There were a lot until I had my rose-colored glasses removed. I did enjoy helping people.
Kontras
Administration and supervisors will be contradictory and will blind side you. You won’t be taught what the policies are and then have a meeting about a policy when you break one. (You will never be told that these are disciplinary meetings.) You will be verbally reprimanded for not completing a task that you were supposedly “assigned”. You’ll get the cold shoulder for socializing with your coworkers yet be told you’re not socializing enough. You will be encouraged to learn how the library works yet be called dumb and told you need to stick to your department when you ask questions. You will ask if you can be helpful and be turned down then be chastised for not helping out. You will feel included and part of the team until one day you are called into the director’s office and fired with the reasoning of “you don’t belong here”. I was willing to look over these inconsistencies because working in a library was my dream. It was heartbreaking and eye-opening experience to be fired unexpectedly. Hindsight is 20/20 and I wish I could have seen the toxic work environment sooner. Don’t waste your time working here unless you enjoy being back in high school with the cliques and “in crowd” dynamics along with the constant flipflop of personalities and rules. There’s a reason why there is such a high turnover rate!!’
