Pros

Maidbot reminds me of Austin. Both are loaded with intelligence and creativity, very much on the rise, and a little weird. The company itself is just coming out of nascency. I see an enormous amount of potential, and I've seen company culture and technology consistently trend towards that potential. I regularly compare my experiences with other engineers, and I've often felt their jealousy when I describe Maidbot's team dynamics, decision-making, and particularly our technology stack. I've never learned so much as an engineer, and I have a great deal of latitude to explore my own areas of interest while contributing to Maidbot's core product. I have worn, and continue to wear, many hats. The workplace is flexible and non-bureaucratic. People care more about what you deliver than what hours you work. I've seen feedback from employees and interns be taken in by leadership and regularly used for company-wide course correction. I work with incredibly intelligent and inspirational co-workers. We share common goals and I feel encouraged to grow as an engineer because of them. I can see Maidbot growing into a company with a similar culture to Sparkfun or early Pixar. I think there's a core team and a foundational ethos that embodies what a modern company should be.

Like many startups, Maidbot has struggled with learning how to become a full-fledged company. I don't think any of the struggles are vastly different from what other startups and small businesses also have to go through. One obvious struggle is in recruitment, hiring and turnover. Not every employee hired has been a good fit, and that became painfully obvious as the company grew, both in size and in maturity. Maidbot has not always parted ways with people in the best terms, and I think that's reflected in other reviews. Because of its small size, each person's impact is magnified. Failures and successes become more apparent. In the case of failures, this has both chased away some good talent and lead to resentment/conflict when a disparity in ability was apparent. Also because of team size and the scale of work that needs to be done, employees have had to work long hours. This has often been due to poor planning in uncertain environments and because of the novel product. I do see an honest effort in which the company as a whole, and particularly leadership, has learned from these mistakes. I see the company growing more humble as it grows more successful, and that humility is key in preventing future pain.

I love your analogy about Maidbot being similar to Austin in terms of creativity and scalability while being a little weird. It’s also great to hear how much you have learned over the past few years at the company as learning is part of one of our core values (‘learn, lead, and follow’). On top of that, it’s great to read about your thoughts on our early Pixar-like culture and how much you enjoy the team dynamic. We know that, when you have the right people in the right seats doing the right things, anything is possible. I also appreciate your constructive feedback around hiring and long work hours. We are working to hire a phenomenal internal recruiter to better manage our recruitment process. We have felt pain in the past from the wrong hires, and we are working to improve based on these lessons. Maidbot is a smaller company, so we do acknowledge that could mean more hours for team members and want to hire team members who are willing to commit the time and energy necessary. That said, we know there is still more work to be done on improving the work/life harmony and hope that, as our team scales, the work/life harmony strengthens.
