Pros

Decent benefits. If you lack a conscience, you can get away with hiding from work for years. A free Orca card will get you to their offices, oddly situated in an area of the city plagued with rampant homelessness and general human degradation; which is disregarded with a strange, yet palpable, callousness from the organization.

Kontras

Should you wish to apply for a position at this agency, start by taking a close look at some recent news articles regarding the CEO and the toxic culture he is creating. Such a carefully-crafted toxicity seeps into every nook and cranny of the organization. Sound Transit harbors a fear-based culture steeped in command and control dynamics, creating a hostile work environment whereby most people feel disempowered and disgruntled. Anyone with an ounce of creativity or imagination would feel terminally stifled here. The fear of failure in the agency is so entirely palpable, my boss used to shake with anxiety, immobilized, on an almost daily basis. In this environment, innovation will never thrive. If you are looking for an organization where you can make a difference, contribute, and have your opinions valued, please don't bother applying to Sound Transit. It will never happen, here, so long as senior management fears repercussions from the board and public on every business decision, down to ordering paperclips.

Pros

The mission is what drives the work; there are a lot of people excited to get mass transportation to many people in the region. Salary is good when compared to other agencies, but internally, it is a mess and not equitable. Good opportunities for growth if you play your cards well.

Kontras

Lots of bureaucracy. Salary discrepancy among peers, some who do less than you make way more than you. Never-ending leadership turnover that creates constant changes and instability among teams. Leadership decisions that do not make sense and create a negative impact on smaller teams. Some ERGs had more flexibility in their activities than others, and this was noticeable to the other ERGs. I saw 5-6 CEO/Acting CEOs during my 10-year period... which by itself says a lot. Before leaving, there was talk that folks would be asked to come to the office 3 times a week, but there is no space for everyone. The pandemic showed that we could all work remotely, unsure of the need for the push for the min 3 days in the office when the minimum required space is not even there.
