Pros
Students and support staff are amazing for the most part. Benefits are good - sick days, family leave, retirement match, tuition remission for family (all hard fought victories thanks to our unions, make no mistake!)
Kontras
From an actual staff person, not a student worker or TA: The reorganization of SAS is a joke. Find me a business school professor who thinks adding layers upon layers of middle management is a good idea... total waste of money and everyone’s time. Let the people in the trenches do our jobs and stop looking over our shoulders like we’re kids. Also the new finance system implementation has been a complete sh$&show and increased everyone’s workload substantially. Lots of people who’ve worked for the university for many years are taking early retirement because of the new (micro)management system and the ridiculous finance system. They are now suggesting that we take an “Accounting 101” training to be able to understand their convoluted system. We are not accountants nor are we paid enough to be, we are supposed to be supporting the professors and students but we’re so busy doing finance stuff that we have little time for helping the actual work of scholarly research and educating students happen. Poor leadership at the highest levels has allowed this to happen (Barchi, I’m looking at you). And the lack of respect shown at the bargaining table this year makes it painfully obvious that management gives less than two sh$&s about us. We do have great benefits, but they’re trying their hardest to take them away at every turn. Maybe spend less on football and invest in the people who actually make this university run!
