Pros

The employees are dedicated and work diligently. The benefits package, the tuition reimbursement for employee's children (they do have to qualify for admission, just like every other student), and the opportunity to advance one's own education. The whole atmosphere of being on a research university campus is intellectually stimulating. There is easy access to a huge variety of events on any number of topics. And there is the connection to almost 250 years of history since it was founded before the Revolutionary War. And of course the students. Few workplaces have so many opportunities for intergenerational interaction, and every year's graduation gives a sense of accomplishment.

Kontras

The university is a public university, although the state provides a smaller and smaller percentage of the overall budget. The budget cuts have forced so many layoffs, it is depressing. And there have been no salary increases for years! It is also stressful to work wondering if tomorrow there will be more and your own job could be the next one cut. The deep cuts in administrative staff, force those who are left to assume more and more work, often on one's own time. The pressure can be quite overwhelming.

Pros

co-workers are super nice, friendly and collaborative. Good flexibility in work arrangements. My immediate boss is nice.

Kontras

Morale is quite low, and turnover is high. We are losing good people and goals are not being met. Senior Leader tell us to do more with less, and do not want constructive feedback. They don't lead by example, taking elaborate trips instead of being present and supporting staff. Rules don't apply to them. So disappointing, not what you would expect from a public university.
