Pros

-Flexible Hours (Not outside of 9-5, though) -Remote -Rapidly Expanding (I think? I keep seeing them make new job postings looking for interns.)

I'm only going to put one con here, since it's incredibly pervasive. This company, being tiny as it is, has very limited resources, especially in regards to its team of interns. This lack of resources manifested itself as: -Being Paid Minimum Wage -Hours if not days in turnaround time while communicating with supervisor. This greatly hindered my productivity and ability to contribute code. -A lack of available projects (hired for Java/Python data analytics projects, wound up working on front-end HTML/CSS/JavaScript most of the time, regularly went days without a project or task to work on) -VERY limited hours (max of 16 a week) -Incredibly limited company engagement that I'd never seen before. During my 3 months working there, I'd only met my supervisor. I met the CEO/my boss for the first time during my exit interview. -General Disorganization-- I wasn't given access to my GitHub to upload my project until two months in, which left me with local Version Control and all its headaches. Without trying to denigrate the company-- they are doing some fascinating work, it's also worth mentioning that during my exit interview the CEO told me, and I quote, my work was "irrelevant to the company." There was otherwise no drama or even mal-intent on either side that would serve as a precursor to this.

We strive to be transparent with all our interns from the outset - regarding weekly hour limits, pay structure, expectations, and reporting lines. Your designated supervisor was also your direct manager throughout the internship, as communicated from the beginning. The CEO typically does not interact with interns (outside of potential exit interviews), which is standard for a small and focused team. Regarding your project work: while we understand your interest in specific technologies, the scope of your internship did include a meaningful amount of Python-related tasks. Project availability can vary based on business priorities and intern engagement, and we do our best to communicate such shifts clearly throughout the program. As for the quote from your exit interview, we believe it may have been misunderstood. The CEO’s comment was simply intended to emphasize that internship projects - by design - are exploratory, not tied to core company deliverables, and not always expected to reach completion. Like any internship, both the intern and the company invest in the process with the understanding that outcomes can vary. Our goal is to offer a learning opportunity without undue pressure, and we set those expectations clearly from the start. We appreciate your time and contributions, and we wish you all the best in your future endeavors.

Working at a small company can offer a range of unique advantages and opportunities (Closer Work Relationships, Visibility and Recognition, Flexibility, Learning Opportunities and Company Culture) What I value in working for ObjectSecurity is the ability to show my personal accountability and an opportunity to use my skills and abilities with autonomy. ObjectSecurity represents motivation for self-improvement and learning, respecting others, keeping promises and providing excellent service.
