Pros

There are some really great people at Intercom and some teams doing really great work.

Kontras

First and foremost the biggest issue is gender inequality. I regularly witnessed women get talked over or be completely ignored in meetings and left in the shadows of loud, pretentious men who are good at managing up. I consistently noticed that women were rarely present in leadership reviews I took part in. Middle management is inexperienced or non existent in most cases, while leadership micro manages and blocks many projects from shipping on time, if at all. Many late nights of wasted work happen purely based off personal disinterest in the work with no actual constructive feedback. To top it all off there is no real process in place and cross functional communication is terrible. Everyone wants to blame everyone else and is looking for someone to point the finger at rather than working together to solve the problem. If you have a manager that you can be friends with, you’ll be fine, if not you’ll likely get caught up in the chaos, blocked on projects and passed up for growth opportunity. “We are not a perks company” is regularly messaged yet the salary is far below competitors. Offering benefits to your employees isn’t a bad thing and you can do it without going overboard. It doesn’t help that the “unlimited vacation” policy isn’t actually respected and will quickly be held against you if they need a reason to knock on your performance. It’s a shame things have gotten as bad as they have because the product and brand have a lot of potential. But when you only invest in certain people you’re not going to accomplish much in the long term.

Reading this is really hard. I am sorry that this was your personal experience at Intercom. Making sure every employee feels empowered to the best work of their careers is our top priority. For many employees at Intercom I think they would share that they are doing truly impactful work and helping to build something special. That said, like all company's there are areas we can improve. Thanks for the honest feedback.

Pros

One of the biggest positives is the opportunity to work on meaningful, high-impact projects. The company provides access to the right tools, resources, and support needed to do great work. As a senior engineer, I feel trusted to think critically about problems, challenge assumptions, and help reframe solutions when needed. Stakeholders and the broader business are receptive to feedback, which creates a strong environment for collaboration and problem-solving. When blockers come up, my manager and the organization move quickly to remove them. Overall, it’s a fast-moving, high-trust environment where strong engineers can make a real impact.

Kontras

The pace is very fast, which can be a challenge depending on how someone prefers to work. Priorities, tools, and ways of working can change quickly, and it requires a willingness to adapt, learn, and rewire how you approach problems. For people who prefer slower, more predictable environments, the pace may feel intense at times. However, for those who are comfortable with change and motivated by momentum, it can also be one of the most rewarding aspects of the company.

Pros

Founders are still involved and will help on top accounts; competitive compensation; access to the tools one needs; no apparent shortage of money; good breakfast

Kontras

Silent layoffs; lack of trust by leadership; senior management is poor at defining and communicating expectations; the fast pace of hiring leads to confusion and ever evolving priorities; tiger teams start haphazardly and end quickly creating uncertainty across the company; a once strong team-first culture has weakened as the company collaborates less and become more corporate; benefits have been reduced; poor professional development; the ferocious pace negatively slows enablement; c-level strategy changes often because ICP changes regularly; employees no longer are a top priority as investor interests have taken center stage; an old company value of 'We go further together' was never replaced with anything about working as a team which is another sign of the diminishing culture
