Pros

I am an LMHC and have worked in the non-profit human services sector for 15 years. I have worked in many different fields and capacities, from line staff to program development and management. IFD has truly been one of the healthiest organizations to work for. I have not experienced gossip, poor boundaries, or a culture of negativity that is endemic in so many non-profits working with traumatized clients. Supervisors assume you have the best intentions and are willing to work with you to help you be successful at your job. They trust your clinical judgement and provide supervision whenever you need it. As a therapist I like the structure the Homebuilders program provides and it has assisted me in being more goal-directed in private practice as well. The program is evidence based, so you're doing work that research has shown to be effective at keeping families together. I also like working autonomously and in clients' home environments. Training is very thorough and no where else have I ever had as much leave time given at the outset of employment -- which we are encouraged to use for our own self-care and mental health.

-paperwork can feel time consuming -sometimes you travel extensively -this is crisis-response work and the nature of crisis is unpredictable

Work-life balance can be pretty tough to manage. It does force you to get better with your boundary-setting skills Long commutes if clients don’t live near you
