Pros

Great benefits. Great pay. Some opportunity for overtime. Air-conditioned office setting (always helps). Longevity guarantees the best work schedules, promotional potential in-house or other agencies, etc. Partial payment of tuition (per semester) after one year of work completed.

Kontras

Some of the best paid jobs are still right here in our backyards. Federal jobs are well-paid and no one can contest with the health benefits it offers. Especially if you work for the United States Postal Service. But what is really the price to pay for having job security? Should they be allowed to disregard the voices of the employees? Think about what truly makes you happy at work (besides the money)! Is it really worth it to be abused and belittled by the angry public,seeking to take out the anguish and frustration of tax season out on you? Is it really worth it to have to pick up the sewage inexperienced tax preparers leave on unsuspecting taxpayer returns? I guess you can decide.

-Got me started in my career as an auditor -thorough tax law training -many senior auditors helping you learn the profession

-communication from management is not always transparent -when you are at the bottom of the ladder, you get verbal abuse from not only POA and taxpayers (understandable, given this is the IRS), but also management/OJI's. They want to look good to their bosses and will throw you under the bus if they have to in order to save themselves. Even if they gave you instructions that got you in trouble. They SHOULD be supporting you in your function as an auditor, but they'll do whatever is easiest for themselves ultimately. -on job training can be disorganized -bureaucratic culture -like many other companies, a lot of things you're expected to learn by yourself. Such as how to avoid POA delays.
