Pros

Excellent seasonal work. If you have questions about a tax topic that your client brings in, other tax pros are happy to share their knowledge. That was the most enjoyable part of the job for me was the helpful senior tax pros. Supervision is generally pretty good about getting back to you, especially if the client is with you. Comfortable work environment. Small office. Commissions if you get productive work hours. Metrics help you know where you stand and how to improve for constant feedback. Pay is ok. Commissions are a good bonus, but only if your hours remain productive. This is an excellent place to hone accounting skills for those pursuing it.

Kontras

Lunch and breaks are a bit of a challenge when understaffed. Have something easy to prepare. Don't go out during those times. The hardest part of the job is keeping in touch with clients who don't respond back about tax returns. Be ready to be on your clients in the nicest way. Don't start a return until you have interviewed them about their situation and have a good idea if they plan to follow through. Understaffing is common in the beginning of the year. Especially common during the post tax season (After tax day, where you deal with people who have gotten irs letters. They need to ensure they have at least one enrolled agent on site at all times. Technical issues happen a lot with their software as it is changing. Unless client is with you, tech support is slow, and you may be better off finding a work around. All in all, the company faces many challenges, but I can see they are working on finding solutions, but progress is hit and miss.

Pros

Flexible availability. Path for promotion is obvious and quantified.

Kontras

Bonus/commission it is based on level and sales so is low in states without a state tax form. Hourly wage comes out of bonus. Pressure to sell items that don't add to your commission. They push customer surveys but you can be penalized if someone complains about the company, price, amount of emails etc even though you have no control. Some employees are frustratingly low quality and you will spend time helping or fixing their mistakes time that works against your commission. You are expected to answer phones, make appointments, scan, print, take money, help new comers all while maximizing returns. If you take over someone's client and find a mistake you are expected to work against your commission to file amendments peace of mind claims etc.
