Pros

A wealth of talent in the workers Unlimited leave (but you’ll never feel like you can take it)

Leadership is made up of gossip, unsupportive, male-driven egos. They have identified their favorites within the organization (men mostly) to lead initiatives despite many leading outside their areas of expertise, while more qualified workers sit on the sidelines time after time. Turnover has been very high and they are running out of ways to spin the reasons to pin it on the workers rather than admitting the company has an issue. The organization moves from idea to idea and business initiative to business initiative more at the first sign of adversity. Whether to try to fool investors or to avoid working hard is anyone’s guess, but it leaves everyone wondering what is next. Management says they want ideas, out of the box thinking and honest feedback, but they don’t. If you do it, prepare for some backlash. Oh and the slew of 5 star reviews is because they saw all the negative reviews and asked people to write some positive things. The other reviews are absolutely spot on. This is a company of smoke and mirrors and while it all sounds like a great idea don’t be fooled by the used car salesman tactics to get you in the door.

Pros

Formation Bio has been one of the more intellectually engaging places I’ve worked. The company moves quickly, and there’s a strong focus on solving hard problems in a practical way rather than just following how things have traditionally been done in biotech. The people are a big reason I’ve enjoyed working here. Teams are generally collaborative, thoughtful, and open to new ideas. You get a lot of ownership and visibility early, which can be challenging at times but also creates real opportunities for growth and learning.

Kontras

Like any fast-growing company, priorities can shift and there’s some ambiguity that comes with moving quickly. It’s probably not the right environment for someone looking for a very structured or slow-paced organization. But if you enjoy building, learning, and having impact immediately, it’s a rewarding place to be.

In general my colleagues are kind and talented people. If you aren't in a managerial or leadership role, you can operate with a lot of autonomy and still collect a paycheck, since leadership is very far away from the actual work and most of the middle managers avoid micro management. This is a pretty good place to work for anyone looking for a lower-pressure environment or a temporary landing spot. If you are looking for a managerial or leadership role, there are opportunities to climb quickly, with limited correlation to real positive output.

Leadership has sharply declined over the last couple of years, and big new hires seem to just make it worse. Most people in higher up positions seem either disinterested in interfacing with the company's actual operations (which makes some sense for the CEO, but you only need one of those), or do so in a way that is essentially just jumping from pet project to pet project, with nothing lasting very long. This naturally leads to a lack of direction, and in turn a weird bottom-up style of operation, where everyone is scrambling to come up with the shiny new thing that catches the attention of leadership for a short period of time. I will say they are effective at fundraising, but are just less interested in the execution side of things, in my opinion.
