You won't get anywhere beyond your starting wage unless you are willing to spend YEARS working at it. I watched people go far above and beyond the duties of their post for months, only to be passed up for a raise for no discernable reason. I felt no reason to try to excel in my duties because I knew that better people than me were (apparently) undeserving.
