Pros

From top to bottom, Fire Engine RED is a company that knows itself and is committed to serving institutions of Higher Education through a variety of services. The CEO and Owner works hard to promote a culture of transparency not only internally, but also with it's clients as well. This is something I very much value as an employee. Work-life balance is also a big piece of the company culture. Having worked at an institution that was always willing to take more of my time, it's a huge difference being at Fire Engine RED. Yes, there are demands at different times like any other job, but leadership is incredibly supportive and wants you to take time off when needed. Compensation is incredibly fair and unlike a public company, the CEO works hard to make sure that your efforts are recognized. I've received two generous pay raises since starting at the company and know the opportunity for more exists. In regards to advancement and mobility opportunities, I would say that there are lots of opportunities depending on your skill set. If you make the professional and personal investment in Fire Engine RED, you will see opportunities. Several of my colleagues have been promoted, able to work across divisions and build on their own success.

Kontras

Given that we're a virtual company, I'd love more opportunities to connect with others in person and meet people face to face. I've met several already, but would love the opportunity to meet more and make more connections.

Pros

Lots of autonomy. 100% remote company with tons of flexibility in terms of scheduling and processes. (This could also be a con if you're not a self-starter and just want a checklist of tasks/tickets or are someone who craves face-to-face interaction.) Company culture is incredibly progressive. This is the only company I've worked for that paid more than just lip service to work life balance. It is super important and enforced from the top down. Benefits package is crazy good. They really care about doing right by their customers and employees. It is a very ethical place to work. Also an interesting place to work. Tackling big scaling problems with software going to market with tons of potential if executed well. They also value UX and design, if that's your thing. Great sales/service/financial leadership on the executive team.

Kontras

It is a small privately owned company. CEO runs the place on her terms for better or worse. If you share her outlook and politics: great. If not: move along. These are words she'll tell you herself. Has the planning and organization issues you'd expect of a sales driven shop building software. Can get too caught up on process. Not enough engineers/product people on the executive team for a software company. Opacity of management's hiring and firing decisions can be frustrating. Lack of stability in team structures can take a heavy toll in engineering.
