Pros
I was paid $11 an hour working with Fastenal - almost $2 over minimum wage in my state. I was satisfied with the compensation.
Kontras
Any student that is considering doing an internship with Fastenal, know that you will essentially be a part-time employee. I was mislead about this fact before accepting the position. In my eleven week internship, I didn't learn really anything that would be applicable to my future aspirations. I broke down a lot of cardboard boxes, put away stock, and rung up customers. I was sat in front of a computer learning concepts that didn't apply to keep me entertained while the store was slow (often). The region I was in was doing so poorly that towards the end they wanted me to go cold call customers, but had given me no training, nor was this a prior expectation. They have since closed that store. I would have not left the part-time job I had at the time if I had known the position was a facade. If you're a woman, also be wary. I was in a few different stores and it wasn't the most female friendly environment - no matter if I let it be known that I was uncomfortable. While there were no lewd comments ever directed at me, I often heard demeaning things that my coworkers did to other women and they would tell their stories very explicitly.
