Pros

- vast majority of the people are great to work with - vibrant. A lot of communication happens via videos that are made by ICs, full of memes and unhinged plots - good work life balance

Kontras

- new CEO since Aug 2025 is challenging to work with - management seems out of touch with day to day experience of ICs - many women are underleveled here and no opportunities for engineers on some teams to demonstrate the full breadth of their abilities - slightly low pay compared to other start ups - lots of small scale layoffs with less than a day’s notice - there are mandates to use AI for everything and open aggression if you’re bearish or skeptical about some of the tools

Pros

Working at Descript for a little over four years was one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. The culture is exceptional; this is a company that genuinely encourages you to have opinions, take initiative, and contribute beyond the boundaries of your job description. If you're the type of person who wants to make an impact rather than just clock in and execute tasks, Descript is an environment where that instinct is recognized and rewarded. The career growth opportunities reflect this as well. When you show up with ownership and drive, the company notices and invests back in you.

Kontras

At times things could feel unclear or ambiguous, but in hindsight this was largely a reflection of where the company was in its growth stage when I joined. It's the nature of early stage startups, and honestly navigating that ambiguity ended up being part of what made the experience so valuable professionally.

Pros

The mission of being a creative tool that anyone can use is exciting, but the internal culture is making it impossible to be successful. For a while, the company was filled with passionate, unique talent, but they've all been scared away or let go.

Kontras

Why no one realizes that the leader of the people org is highly toxic astonishes me. The people team has/had some strong talent but they've created an environment where no one can disagree with decisions. If someone makes a mistake they're reminded of that over and over again, so there's zero safety. Consistent siloing of, adding to the toxicity. The people function is so deeply broken. Also, very low comp and equity is minimal.
