Pros

If you're passionate about animal welfare, this is a great place. Option to work remote is definitely a plus Pretty cool office space Compensation was competitive

Kontras

A lot of video meetings that start with a lot of idle chit chat and don't seem to go anywhere until the CEO starts talking about the latest change he is implementing. A lot of ideas are abandoned and a lot of work goes down a deep well without any real input from the team. In other words, you might be working on a specific idea for some period of time and come in to work Monday morning to learn that your idea has been abandoned in favor of something the CEO hacked together the night before. I got the impression that happened even more often than I was exposed to. Very seldom will the CEO check in or remark on what you're working on. Even more seldom will you get a response from him when you try to initiate a feedback loop, so expect emails and slacks to just sort of drift into the ether. In the time I spent with Petline, the launch date was pushed out numerous times, and unsurprisingly was pushed out yet again after I left. Looks like they finally did get the program off the ground. Ultimately I enjoyed interacting with a lot of employees I worked with and met. The same can not be said for the CEO. I didn't dislike him however he was, in my experience, neurotic, uncommunicative, and incapable of taking criticism regarding his ideas. If you didn't effusively believe and preach that the product was just going to click and make sense for buyers, you weren't speaking the language of the company culture. I'm fairly certain I was let go because I did what I thought was expected of me, which was to think critically about the plan to go to market. Sadly, I don't think that Petline is going to make it. It will almost certainly fail without some wholesale changes from the top down. First things first, the Founder and CEO needs to step down and bring someone in with a little distance and perspective, and more finely honed leadership skills. Someone who will look at the product offering critically and start poking holes in it, because it still lacks refinement and needs continued touching up (just like literally every product I've worked on). Last thought, if you want to take a risk on Petline, just go in knowing that if you get on the wrong side of the CEO (and you may not even know you've done so, I sure didn't) you will be let go without warning, fanfare, or consideration. I've never quite experienced anything like it.

As an employer, I want to thank you for the feedback. It’s always important for us to hear what those no longer with us have to say. Unfortunately, big decisions often need to be made to ensure the business is running efficiently and effectively. At a small start-up, this will always cause upheaval, not everyone will be happy, and may see things in an entirely different perspective. Rapid change is a big part of working for a start-up and the resilience to push on when we need to table a project or make a big pivot is truly necessary for this environment. It may seem disconnected at times, but in the end, we’re all striving to achieve a common goal. We will continue to make strides and to be a collaborative orchestra. Unfortunately, some may never really understand or like our approach to writing the music.

Pros

Here's something fun: Petline hasn't launched yet but they've already made me a better pet-parent. Now certainly, "become a better pet-parent" wasn't one of my goals when I accepted the role, but I've been surprised a few times by my personal growth since I joined the team. On career goals I'll say this: to the credit of the management team at Petline, they've recognized talents and areas I where I thrive before I did. I've been given opportunities that I didn't expect and for which I am deeply grateful. Back to pet-parenting, Petline is a startup and every person at this company is heavily committed to our mission and goals. Just working alongside like-minded folks has made me consider who I am as a pet-parent. I know my pets better than I did before and I know they are happier for it. Petline won't always be a startup, but I'm confident that as we move forward it will be with integrity and the intention to foster an environment where individual strengths are recognized, and weaknesses are supported.

Kontras

Petline is a startup and anyone familiar with the concept should know that it takes hard work, a lot of brainpower, and constant flexibility. It can be hard to accept and frustrating when business decisions seem to flow and change like water, but it's rewarding. It might not be for right for everyone, but when it's right, it's right.
