Pros

In some positions, they offer competitive salary for the industry. Beyond this, the only other pro's I can think of are the people (team and middle managers), as most are very talented and supportive. Lastly the only other real benefit is you can list Dish/Sling on your resume and generally it's a recognizable brand.

Kontras

Where to begin... 1. Benefits are terrible - extremely low PTO and it's combined with sick/vacation. 2 weeks to start for your first 2 years. 7 holidays. Health insurance is costly even for singles. 401K is mediocre at best. No paternity/maternity leave. Very behind the times in overall compensation/benefits package and not competitive at all. 2. Archaic approach to flexibility. Even salaried employees have to track their time and work hours, and follow formalized processes if they need to step away for a personal appointment, child's need, etc. Don't even think about working from home, even after covid. Core hours are absolutely still a thing and everyone must be at their desk from 9-4, but you're expected to work a minimum of 40 hours each week. Still require employees to "badge out" for lunch. While most businesses are adapting to the times and modern work environment (need for employee flexibility), Dish/Sling are going the opposite direction. This organization is not meant for families, or anyone needing/wanting occasional flexibility, and it shows. 3. Lack of leadership/organizational vision - this is in part due to the extreme turnover. This has created countless issues already, including confusion on business priorities, confusion of roles, and overall muddy business strategy. The trajectory is not looking good and I would consider others to only accept a role at Dish as their "last resort". Senior leadership needs to open their eyes and ears, and actually take to heart why people are leaving in masses and why people are expressing their dissatisfaction. It's not a case of "well, Dish/Sling just isn't for everybody, they can leave!" as the leaders like to reiterate. Please take a look in the mirror, humble yourselves, and stay curious/open to change. To succeed as a business now and in the future, major changes need to happen at Dish/Sling. Group think at the top is not the way to keep your best talent in a fast-moving, competitive landscape.

Pros

Good middle management and compensation. Lots of opportunities to learn from plenty of smart people.

Kontras

Disclaimer -This is all water cooler hearsay and opinion. During the two years I was there the bill came due on being penny wise and dollar dumb over the years. A great example is Sling. Dish beat basically everyone to market but Netflix with streaming and was the first platform to offer live TV via stream (which YouTube TV still uses as a selling point). What happened? Dish paid the original engineers to build it and then balked at paying them to document and maintain it. Same deal with the cyber security team. After years of expecting security engineers to do exceptional work shorthanded for middling compensation eventually they had none. It was all put on the security manager, who had a heart attack after repeatedly requesting support. He understandably did not return. Not much later one of the core systems was ransomed, and the company fell out of the fortune 500. Despite being in the middle of dealing with the consequences of those decisions leadership was doing it all again with the mobile network build out.

Hearing that you found value in our middle management and compensation, as well as the chance to learn from the talented individuals on our teams, is encouraging. We appreciate you recognizing those aspects of your time with us. On the other hand, the historical context and concerns you shared regarding executive decision-making, infrastructure maintenance, and resource allocation are deeply concerning. Maintaining a stable, secure, and well-supported environment for our workforce is of the utmost importance, and we take feedback regarding employee well-being and operational decisions seriously. We are continually working to strengthen our operations and better support our teams across all business units. Because this review references a sensitive medical situation alongside organizational challenges, we would welcome the opportunity to hear more about your perspective. Please consider reaching out to our team directly at peopleoperations@dish.com so we can learn more.
