Pros

Great Developing Teller Excellence class. Work with charities, raising money. If you like badgering customers with selling products and services they don't want, this job is for you.

Inconsistencies in running branches. Greeting customers by name is seldom done and even though it is mandatory, it is seldom enforced. Pay raises are small to none, unless you are upper management who receives bonuses and huge raises. Mandatory teller referral goals, that if not met you will receive warnings and termination, which causes tellers to cheat in reporting referrals. Staffing is a joke. Seen plenty of times 3-4 customers standing in line with only one teller window open. Managers see the long customer lines, but ignore the situation. Teller training downtown is adequate, but there are a lot of areas of banking that are not taught. Many tellers have expressed they received better training at their branch than in the teller training program.

Here’s a revised version: Commerce Bank was the worst place I’ve ever worked. I came into the role with years of experience, confidence, and a strong work ethic, but I left questioning my abilities in a way I never had before. The management style I experienced was disparaging, overly critical, and unsupportive. Rather than feeling coached or developed, I felt constantly torn down. The work environment became so toxic for me that I ultimately sought therapy to cope with the anxiety I experienced surrounding work. My anxiety became severe enough that my healthcare provider increased my medication. No job should have that kind of impact on someone’s mental well-being. I recognize that others may have different experiences, but mine was one of the most damaging professional experiences of my career. I would encourage prospective employees to carefully evaluate the leadership and management culture before accepting a position, as it can make all the difference. That makes the review both compelling and more defensible.
