Pros

Free coffee and cold boxed lunches on Thursdays

Kontras

Welcome Committee: First impressions matter—and nothing says "welcome" like the literal turd I (and many others) encountered in the reception area. Was it an office pet? A rogue prank? Or just an omen of what was to come? The mystery remains unsolved, but the stench lingers—both literally and figuratively. Leadership Roulette: If stability is what you’re after, prepare to be dazzled by a revolving door of leadership. Three CTOs in a single year! Blink and you'll miss the next reorg or hastily updated vision statement. Leadership’s main skill? Making themselves scarce when things go sideways. The "Family" Culture: Management loves to talk about the "Checkatrade family," which is funny because it feels more like a messy breakup. Massive redundancies left staff shell-shocked—sometimes with just hours' notice—while survivors were cheerily "invited" to write glowing five-star Glassdoor reviews. Nothing says morale boost like forced positivity after your friends get axed. The Bottom Line: I’ve had some rough jobs, but this one takes the (slightly moldy) cake. Honestly, I’d rather move back in with my parents, clean their gutters, and relive my teenage years than step foot in this place again. Avoid. Just... avoid.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. While it’s never easy to read something so strongly worded, we do take feedback like this seriously, because it offers us an opportunity to reflect, learn, and continue improving. We understand that moments of change, particularly when it comes to leadership transitions and organisational decisions, can be unsettling. It’s never our intention for people to feel disconnected or unclear about what’s happening around them. That’s something we’re working hard to improve. We’re building a culture rooted in greater transparency, clearer communication, and genuine respect for the people who help drive this business forward. That focus is shaping the way we work, from how we lead, to how we listen. We’ve introduced more regular opportunities for honest, open discussion across the business: whether through live questions at all-hands, fireside chats, or open Slack forums where anyone can raise a point, challenge decisions, or share their thoughts directly with leadership. These conversations have become an important part of how we strengthen connection and trust, especially during periods of change. We also want to be clear that this isn’t about polishing our Glassdoor score. We genuinely see feedback, even when it’s uncomfortable, as a critical part of understanding where things need to improve. If we don’t hear what’s not working, we can’t act on it. That’s why we’re focused on listening carefully, understanding what people are really experiencing, and building clear plans that move us forward in a better, more informed way. We’ve put real energy into making sure our values aren’t just words we reference occasionally, but something people experience day to day. That means creating space for diverse perspectives, supporting open dialogue, and encouraging respectful challenge - from every level of the business. We know there’s more to do, and we’re not claiming to have it all figured out. But we’re proud of the direction we’re heading, and we’re committed to building a culture that’s not only more open, but more inclusive and more human. We’re sorry this wasn’t your experience, and we wish you all the best in whatever comes next. Thank you again for sharing your perspective - it plays a role in helping us move forward.

Pros

Colleagues of the highest calibre Decent bonus

Kontras

I genuinely want this business to succeed, which is probably why some of the recent decisions have been difficult to watch unfold. At times, it can feel like leadership is building the plane while flying it - which, to be fair, is not uncommon in fast-moving companies, but it does create uncertainty for the people trying to keep everything running day to day. The steady stream of disappearing colleagues has also had an impact on morale. When teams become smaller but workloads stay the same (or grow), burnout becomes a very real risk. And while AI is undoubtedly useful, it’s still not a substitute for experienced people, collaboration, and institutional knowledge. I don’t need this business to act like we’re one big family. But I do want clarity, respect, and the ability to do good work in a healthy environment. Respect and psychological safety are two things not enjoyed at Checkatrade currently, at least as far as I can gather from those I’ve spoken to.

Pros

Some decent people trying to do their jobs

Kontras

I was buzzing to join at first because the place looked busy and full of life, but it took about five minutes to realise it was absolute chaos behind the scenes. The place feels unrecognisable now. Nothing makes sense, teams are stretched to bits, and the atmosphere is tense from the moment you walk in. Traders are kicking off every day about rising costs and the amount of fake jobs coming through, and half the time the work does not even exist. Staff are leaving, traders are losing their heads, and you get sworn at pretty much every day which tells you everything about what it is really like working here if your job is customer facing. Management uses AI to score your behaviour and attitude on the phone, and they twist whatever it spits out into negative feedback so they can justify putting people on PIPs. It feels cold and robotic, like they want a reason to push people out rather than support them. You will never see a team leader or manager jump on the phone to deal with a customer complaint themselves. They leave all the heat to you while they sit back and avoid anything difficult. They keep talking about reason and scaling the business, but it does not feel like the demand is even there. It honestly makes you wonder if they are just buying leads from some marketing company and hoping no one notices. I have watched people get pushed to the point of mental collapse. The whole place feels like it is drifting with no plan and no one steering the ship. Turnover is through the roof, morale is nonexistent unless you’re in the upper management circles. For everyone below, the vibe is heavy from the moment you walk in. I would seriously warn any prospective candidate to think twice before joining because it is getting worse, not better. There is a reason the same roles pop up on the careers page every few months. It is a full on revolving door.
