Career advancement is NOT based on merit, talking your way out of work is more likely to give you a promotion rather than doing the work. Decisions are made without consulting anyone, commitments are made by technically inclined people, and people that actually tried to implement those impossible ideas are blamed for the failure. Since raises and promotions are not based on merit, compensation is not actually competitive after a year.
