Pros
Benefits are pretty good. I cannot complain in regards to the benefits package Calpine offers. Each year I utilize the medical aspect of the package to the extreme. Work Environment / People: Overall I really enjoy the personnel I work with on daily basis. Everyone wants to do their best and wants the equipment to operate as reliable as possible AND as safe as possible. Like anything we all have "our moments" so I say view it more like a dysfunctional family at times. We always have each others backs. Work Schedule: Here we enjoy a 7 on / 7 off shift rotation meaning a person works 7 days straight and then takes 7 days off. Rinse repeat. As long as we're fully staffed you'll actually get all 7 days off every other week. Nice!!
Kontras
The main downside to an independent power producer such as Calpine in particular is the lack of resources on the personnel side. Calpine prides itself in being able to make the most power with the least amount of people. Meanwhile the personnel have to carry many "hats" and wear multiple "hats" {hats being responsibilities from a different position]. This is felt throughout the hourly employees and first few levels of management. Having the personnel with the required skillset to maintain aging facilities while also trying to stay competitive in a evolving market is difficult. Recruiting - Calpine, in my opinion, needs to be better with recruiting in general. A strategy need to be implemented to start bringing in fresh talent to augment the aging workforce.; more of a year-round approach.
