My role was not what it was pitched as (I’m a specialist) and I was punished for not being able to do a different specialist’s job. My supervisor threatened my position and gave me reviews that were not supported by facts. My skip level manager announced the week I started that our team was being pressured to justify/reduce headcount, refused to even accept a meeting request to discuss my concerns, and generally hid to avoid a difficult conversation. The company overall is probably (?) not as badly managed as this particular group was managed. If Block is your best option (it’s not), you’d be well-advised to avoid trusting your coworkers. The culture seems to reward cowardice and blame-shifting. Unless you can dodge bad managers long enough to vest in your stock (and IF the stock doesn’t lose too much value during that time), you might be better off working for this company on a contract basis so that your time is valued. The hours will be long and you’ll be expected to act like you’re so very grateful and lucky to have been chosen.
