I submitted an unsolicited application and received an email after about two weeks with an invitation for a phone call. I confirmed and then had a 30-min interview with my later supervisor. It was a nice and friendly talk; I wasn't asked difficult questions, it was rather an exchange of ideas and the supervisor mostly talked about what the internship would look like.
