Dr. Melanie Altizer, Assistant Regional Medical Director was recently presented with the “Outstanding Clinical Teacher for Obstetrics and Gynecology” from The Schmidt College of Medicine- Florida Atlantic University for her contributions to educating and mentoring students. In the words of one of her students, “She cares deeply about the community and seeks ways to provide excellent care to patients who are medically underserved. She is graceful under pressure, and always puts the patients and their families first. As a medical student, I learned a ton under her wing, as she always found opportunities to teach me even with a large workload and running the department. She spends a lot of time thinking about the whole person and their circumstance when it comes to treating, which I admire.” Congratulations, Dr. Altizer and thank you for making exceptional contributions to medical education and community health.

Happy #ValentinesDay! As we celebrate a day full of love, we encourage you to love your heart. One way to love your heart? Dark chocolate! Studies have shown many health benefits associated with consuming dark chocolate in moderate amounts. Dark chocolate can be a rich source of flavonoids, plant-based antioxidants shown to lower blood pressure, improve blood flow and boost overall heart health. In addition, the fats found in dark chocolate do not elevate cholesterol levels. These health benefits don’t apply to all kinds of chocolate. High-quality dark chocolate is the highest in flavonoids. When choosing dark chocolate, the more pure the cacao content (75% or higher), the better. Portion control is also important, and the recommended amount considered healthy to consume daily is one to two ounces. Grab some dark chocolate and enjoy the day!
