    Stimmt gegen Geschäftsführer

Ich arbeite seit mehr als 3 Jahren bei US Naval Research Laboratory (Vollzeit)

    Pros

NRL has some of the leading researchers in their field and the latest and greatest equipment. The potential to collaborate and work between disciplines is good.

    Kontras

Management direct as a whole changes frequently and is brutal for entry level scientists look to move up. The moral is low and work expectation are extremely high.

    Negative Prognose

Ich arbeite seit mehr als 5 Jahren bei US Naval Research Laboratory (Vollzeit)

    Pros

I am a research oriented person and there are interesting research work in NRL if you can obtain funding. There are a lot of very smart and talented people here providing a challenging and intellectually stimulating environment. I appreciate the opportunity that has been provided to me so far. Also with the tough economy, this place seems more stable than most of the industry. There is also a great history of research in the laboratory. The people are overall friendly. Also you usually get your own room to work in. A generous healthcare and retirement plan should also be mentioned.

    Kontras

You constantly have to scurry around for future funding either through the base program (which only funds 20% of the laboratory internally) or DARPA, ONR, NAVAIR, etc. To obtain funding is challenging because you are competing against universities and other laboratories. This has sometimes lead to people pitching ideas that they do not necessarily want to work on. Salary growth has been fairly stagnant and there was a recent sequestration in 2013 for the first time in the laboratory's history. Cost of living in the area including housing, groceries, raising kids, etc. is very high whereas the salaries have been relatively flat. I see some trouble ahead with reduction in DoD budget and reduction in basic research. Also there is very little interaction inside a division or outside a division within the laboratory. Finally if you are trying to raise a family, you will have to compete against people who are fresh from school and have more time on their hand to work. Security clearance and issues are always annoying but then again, that is part of being DoD.

    Neutrale Prognose

Ich arbeite seit mehr als 10 Jahren bei US Naval Research Laboratory (Vollzeit)

    Pros

Good science and interesting applications. Dedicated and committed staff. Good balance of strategic and tactical projects

    Kontras

Too much time spent looking for funding. Lack of funds can lead to silly inter-office politics. Uninvolved and disengaged Management that often competed with their direct reports. Commute can be difficult
