    Pros

The people are smart, motivated, and full of heart.

    Kontras

Terrible work. Terrible clients. Any interesting work is given to freelancers who will then be hired on and immediately promoted. Of course this all happens on the backs of full-time employees. The execs boast and parade while moral couldn’t be lower. A once hip social agency is now a banner factory. They’ve axed their “work-life balance” reputation and are removing it from their core principals, so be sure not... mention this in an interview. Any friendly feedback or concerns are met with “well that’s advertising!” This is particularly troubling with the uptick of blatant old-school misogyny at Swift. It was depressing to watch the only higher-up female creative get let go, especially considering that the creative department is at least 70% men. It feels pointless to even write this because I know there will be an official response that’ll be something along the lines of “I’m sorry YOU felt that way. YOU must be unhappy.”

Leave tasteful decisions to people with taste. Stop burning out talent. Stop shaming people who want to make better work. Stop hiring people just because they worked at W+K. Stop bragging about your agency being “majority female-identifying” when the creative department is in fact mostly male.

    Pros

At one point, Swift occupied a unique position in Portland. “Founded by two women,” as they will never miss an opportunity to tell you (now owned/operated by a global conglomerate, so how meaningful this is today is questionable). They made a few lucky bets, and attracted some top notch talent. I was fortunate to work with great people, nearly all of whom have moved on to opportunities Swift never provided them.... Therefore, Swift can be a great stepping stone, because the turnover is high, and Portland is small. Swift is still a decent thing to have on your resume, as they’re known for attracting excellent talent and then squandering them. So if you think of this as less of a place to build a “career” and more of an extended networking opportunity while earning average money, I think you’ll be doing it right. It’s a job, and work/life balance can be decent (depending upon your role).

    Kontras

But don't believe the hype. Swift is not a place that values ideas, invests in its people, or has a vision of its future. It barely has a grasp of its present. They are always chasing the last thing. Every so often, a new VP-of-whatever with actual business experience and insight will be hired to turn the agency in a new direction. Chairs will be shuffled. Meetings and presentations will be performed in the interest... of “transparency”, but this is a one-way mirror. On the other side of the glass is a leadership that sees only their own reflections, hears only their own voices, and outwardly embodies fear of change. After some time, having failed to meaningfully pursue the new direction, blame will be assigned in any direction other than up. This will be reenforced by the small group of sycophants the leadership lets close to them. Rinse and repeat. Yes, anyone can have superficial conversations about the weather with leadership, but many fewer can have substantial ones. The real hierarchy at Swift is not so much based on title, merit or ability as it is a combination of good old fashioned seniority and bootlicking. For all their talk of openness and equality, this is one of the most political workplaces I’ve ever encountered. Case studies in microagressions could be performed within these walls. As even positive reviewers here mentioned, career advancement is not something that there is a clear path for, even if your manager is invested in your development. See again: leadership’s lack of vision, lack of trust in its people, unwillingness to take risks. Swift leadership’s supreme creative talent is perhaps in generating excuses for maintaining the status quo. “A great idea can come from anywhere!” they say, and of course that’s true, but what does that even mean without support to foster those ideas and empower the people who make them? It’s just another way to be patronizing. Finally, should you endeavor to address any of these issues with leadership, no matter how politely, prepare to be gaslit and belittled (even in front of your peers!) by hostile people exquisitely unaware of their own privilege and power. I did not truly understand the phrase “white feminism” until I worked here. It is especially revealing that Swift's responses to negative reviews range from “we’re sorry *you* felt that way” to “it sounds like *you* didn’t mesh with our culture”, rather than addressing the substance of a criticism, or even acknowledging that some of the criticisms could be valid. I've seen food trucks respond to online criticism with more grace. Alas, the most toxic workplaces are the kind that deny they ever could be one.

    Pros

What Swift started as and who they wanted to be was/is right. Two women wanting to create a company that embraced diversity, creativity, and getting stuff done (fast and in budget too). They hired well in the early days and prioritized scrappiness over ego.

    Kontras

As Swift rapidly grew it became an environment that fostered self promotion, inauthenticity, and meaningless titles. You had to look out for yourself at the expense of good work and high emotional health. The CEO was chasing her dreams of making tv commercials which got in the way of nurturing talent and being the type of agency she would want to work for. As the saying goes, if everyone is a director no one is... really a director.

Ich arbeite seit mehr als einem Jahr bei Swift Agency (Vollzeit)

    Pros

The people. You'll form bonds that will help you make it through the days and nights of uncertainty of an egotistical, aggressive executive team that pushes those behaviors on their management team. People are quick to help build your resume and provide LinkedIn referrals to help one another on new opportunities.

    Kontras

It appears the CEO uses the company as a platform to build her personal brand at the expense of losing touch with the vision this company that once prided itself on a unique culture. Now the culture is forced, overworked and uninspired. Those that are left from "the good old days", talk about a company started by two women and then look at each other as if the place is bugged. We've seen some amazing people here one... day and gone the next. The amount of veterans leaving voluntarily make it clear that a big change is coming. Management is only focused on the bottom line and water cooler talk makes the future very uncertain and most preparing for the final days.

    Pros

I appreciate that leadership is intentional in creating a healthy work environment. Swift is very thoughtful in their hiring which results in a place made up of genuinely nice and skilled people.

    Kontras

As a Producer, a lot of our time and energy is spent juggling and scrambling for internal design resources. This can be a cause for stress and tension at times among the production team.

    Rat an das Management

Keep doing what you are doing! Swift is a very special place because of your thoughtfulness. One room for improvement I see would be in providing design resources. I understand that we don’t want to bring in too many designers and possibly have them sitting around, but during my experience we were constantly overloading them. If possible, it would be better to err on a couple of additional production designers.... Any potential underutilization of those designers would be far outweighed by the constant over utilization of producers spending time trying to figure out the puzzle of designers’ workload.

Ich habe für mehr als 3 Jahre bei Swift Agency gearbeitet (Vollzeit)

    Pros

They might have some minor political and management problems, but what agency doesn't?! Swift tries to actually be a beacon of change with their involvement in Time's Up and For the Women. They give you SIX MONTHS maternity leave, then try to make it as easy as possible to ease back into the workforce after having a baby and raising a family. A lot of people don't realize how rare or amazing this is in an agency.... They're professional, but personal, with great culture. They invest in their employees and try to make working there enjoyable. You get FREE HEALTH INSURANCE if you work there. As in, they don't take ANYTHING out of your paycheck for that. They give you wellness days and have great parties and try to take time to recognize people's achievements inside and outside the office. They have healthy snacks. They love dogs. They've got some good clients and are trying to make good work. They provide things like Management Training and regular one-on-ones with employees.

    Kontras

Can be pushed around by clients at times. Management is top-heavy. It can be hard to find a path for promotion. Certain people are kept around because they've been there a while, not because they're actually good at their jobs.

    Rat an das Management

Empower your peeps. Don't be so top-heavy.

    Pros

Swift has always had a collaborative environment where you have the opportunity to contribute at many levels. It's up to you to take those opportunities and articulate your thoughts productively. Their leadership has shown a great knack for developing new business so new challenges will continually emerge for versatile creatives.

    Kontras

Rapid growth over the past few years has caused some hiccups in process and resourcing but they are always striving to correct the issues.

Ich habe für mehr als ein Jahr bei Swift Agency gearbeitet (Vollzeit)

    Pros

    - snacks - easy and unchallenging work - no one works hard so everyone leaves at a decent hour - dogs in office - so many tv screens and cool office space

    Kontras

    - personalities are challenging, good ideas were often tossed aside in favor of the most senior title in the room, regardless of what department they were in - a lot of upward failure resulting in talented people leaving (so political) - there is no culture here. it's like someone went to central casting and said "give me all the kinfolk-y millennials" and did all the millennial things (kombucha on tap, open... office environment, sonos speaker system) just need a surfboard somewhere bros. - lack of titles for zero reason (in the creative department,) this most likely stems from leadership having very little experience in the agency world. (part of their ethos, but leads one to wonder how people who have never worked in agencies or at good agencies can begin to disrupt the agency world...) - big strategy team, no strategy. take any piece of creative and hold it to the brief, nothing adds up. the strategy lines are so loose and relate nothing to what the brand needs to be doing anyways. it's always some random "nugget" found in "research" that no one but the planner has seen and is just one piece of research. i have a computer too you know... - meetings, so many meetings. really about nothing at all with random people who haven't touched the work in weeks. yet there are no hours scoped to do the actual work...or hours scoped at all really. - doesn't strive to do any work beyond "social" because it's what pays the bills. - there is a circle of women who are bullies in the agency which negates your whole women empowering thing. just because you've got a majority of women in the agency doesn't mean your an ally to women in advertising. in fact these women are quite the opposite. - seemed like people were leaving at least on a weekly basis. and others would just be randomly let go. i can count on 2 hands where someone who was a big part of my team just out of the blue was gone with no heads up given or a path forward (this is probably because of the crappy leadership that somehow keeps getting promoted) - rubbish, i got zero book work out of this and this is not a place to learn how to work in an agency.

    Rat an das Management

    - hire seasoned people to add into the c-suite roles and stop elevating known bad apples to bigger roles, they're the poison in your "culture" well. - get creative leadership that will challenge ideas, people and inspire us. - get strategy leaders who understand how to creatively solve a problem not just finding the right thing to say to win the business. - get someone who can write a SOW so that there are... actual hours to bill to for client work. - get a digital team who thinks beyond work they've presented 100 times in the past. - doesn't position yourself as a social media shop. you'll never get great talent that way.

Ich habe für mehr als ein Jahr bei Swift Agency gearbeitet (Vollzeit)

    Pros

1.) Amazing culture led by an executive team that stays rooted in the agencies core values. 2.) Great opportunity to grow, given you have the drive to want more and work for it. 3.) Strong Female leadership that walks the talk when it comes to important issues like maternity leave and the struggles of the modern working woman. 4.) Consistent communication on all fronts. From leadership on changes happening... within the company, transparency on ebbs and flows of the business and constant gathering of feedback. Each employee is also given a semi and annual review with goal driving to track success and growth. 5.) Great roster of brands that are diverse and interesting with a great base of smart and savvy clients. 6.) Majority of players from top to bottom are egoless, which is a huge rarity in this business. 7.) Benefits! Great vacation time and producers work to ensure that all team members take the time they have. PLUS free Friday lunches, Monday breakfast and plenty of learning events to empower the working/creative person. 8.) Overall, it's just fun. Lots of good laughs and good people. Very rarely did I drive into work dreading the day or someone I had to work with.

    Mehr anzeigen

    Kontras

1.) Resourcing is a job on it's own. It's something they are working tirelessly on, but I often felt the frustration of not having the right talent or availability needed to get the best work done. 2.) Studio is also undergoing a lot of change. Having editors/animators in house is a necessity, especially in the tight turnarounds we have to work with in this industry. (I believe a few were hired after I left , so... this may have been addressed!) 3.) Need to build up the technical department (creative expertise, technical leadership and production) this is a growing demand and they aren't getting enough of this piece of the pie. 4.) The Agency is growing very fast with a lot of changes happening rather quickly.
