Ich arbeite in Vollzeit bei Simon-Kucher & Partners (Weniger als ein Jahr)

    Pros

    1. The responsibility that you get from day 1, and resulting opportunities, supercharge personal growth and expand business acumen very quickly.

    2. The work-life balance is leagues above that of other, larger consulting firms.

    3. Consultants take pride in their work, perform at the highest level, and because of this the company is growing fast and clients keep coming back.

    Kontras

No real downsides to working here.

    Rat an das Management

Continue to support consultants that want to try new things, without a dedicated group for this we need to enable new idea generation and incremental improvement while we are actually working on projects.

Ich habe in Vollzeit bei Simon-Kucher & Partners gearbeitet (Über 3 Jahre)

    Pros

    Sometimes relatively acceptable work-life balance; Ability to become somewhat of a pricing expert;
Nice people; low travel requirements; some interesting projects

    Kontras

    - leadership unable to attract/retain clients
    - partners uninterested in personal/professional development of employees
    - lack of training opportunities
    - low pay
    - intransparent promotions
    - partners disloyal to employees

    Rat an das Management

    - let unsuccessful partners go
    - incentivize development of newly appointed partners and employees
    - increase pay
    - remove division barriers for younger consultants and restructure consultant pool to allow cross-sourcing from all divisions

Ich arbeite in Vollzeit bei Simon-Kucher & Partners (Weniger als ein Jahr)

    Pros

    - Not everyone is a jerk.

    Kontras

    - Was rated "well above average" on my work. Despite this, I was fired over the phone while traveling on another continent (!) and without any prior warning. The explanation that the partner ultimately gave me was that "Simon-Kucher is the kind of company where you lose your job if the wrong partner dislikes you." Adding insult to injury, the partner who fired me promised me a generous bonus and two months of extra garden leave. I received none of it. When I got back to him and asked why I had not receive any of it he simply said "you do not work for us anymore". When I pressed on he became very aggressive and threatened that he "knew things" about me.

These are the types of people that they make partners at Simon-Kucher. I.e. dishonest and immature jerks.

As the top consulting firms must work very hard to maintain cultures of integrity (to best serve clients), this obvious lack of integrity should tell you that Simon-Kucher does not have the culture to become a quality firm.

    Rat an das Management

Should be obvious, but sadly, its not:

    - Show employees more respect than to fire them over the phone when they are traveling on the other side of the world.
    - Don't lie
    - Keep your promises
    - Treat other with the same amount of respect that you would want to receive.

Ich arbeite in Vollzeit bei Simon-Kucher & Partners

    Pros

Good work-life balance for the industry
    Incredible colleagues
High responsibility & opportunities for growth at all levels

    Kontras

Slightly lower comp than other top firms, balanced by much better work life balance. For me, it is a good tradeoff to make.

Ich arbeite in Vollzeit bei Simon-Kucher & Partners (Über 3 Jahre)

    Pros

    - Very good knowledge base and know hows on marketing, sales and pricing topics
    - Smart and pleasant colleges
    - High share of analytical work (given interest in working analytically)
    - Overall, good training on marketing and pricing topics - opportunity to gain end-to-end understanding, from setting strategy, doing analytic, coordinating customer research, to implementation

    Kontras

    - Weak middle management layer (due to strong attrition at Senior Consultant / Manager level) leading to coordination / delegation vacuum (lack of proper supervision, bad coordination, unnecessary stress)
    - High share of primadonnas at director / partner level (narcissistic PhDs, paternal management style, starting at the top)
    - Obsession with only one metric - growth, leading to short-termism, decreasing quality of projects
    - Majority of partners are to 95% involved in sales and execution, and only to 5% in people development
    - Projects are inconsistent, from "very cool" to "I would better cut my veins"; so lots of luck are required
    - Pay is not competitive

    Rat an das Management

    Enforce the values
    Enhance people development
Do not let the growth obsession to result in myopia

Ich arbeite in Vollzeit bei Simon-Kucher & Partners (Über 3 Jahre)

    Pros

Very strong culture, meritocracy and fact based, driven by the people who started the company and still work there
Interesting topline topics: won't look at cost cutting at all. Ability to drive/specialize in specific areas
People are great (with very few exceptions)

    Kontras

Big regional differences in terms of salary, responsibility and career path depending on office chosen: still very German- and US-focused
Too slow progression and compensation below other firms
Lack of proper knowledge management system or formal trainings

    Negativ Geschäftsführer

Ich arbeite in Vollzeit bei Simon-Kucher & Partners (Über 5 Jahre)

    Pros

Quick personal growth and responsibility from day 1

    Kontras

    - No strategic vision for the growth of the company, which is quite ironic, once you think it is a "strategy & marketing" consulting firm
    - Focus only on internal revenue growth as an obsession
    - The only relevant KPI appears to be €/day of work, no matter the size of the project or the relevance of the client
    - Many partners, especially the older ones, have limited knowledge of the topics they sell
    - Excessive vertical-ism of decisions such as consulting offer / topics to cover
    - German-centric culture, everything has to be done as in Germany
    - German IT, slow and unable to support
    - Work/life balance is the same as other consulting companies, except in Germany, where they live a bit better. Don’t believe what is said on the company website
    - Lack of transparency: many internal issues are managed poorly / in an opaque way, when they are not altogether hidden, especially if they involve people (partners) bringing money to the company
    - Unknown brand outside the German-speaking market, leading to complex sales to new clients and hard marketability once you want out
    - Limited attention to relevant new trends (big data, AI, etc.)
    - Pricing pricing pricing, it seems that everything is pricing, while there are many more areas unexploited, but senior people are refusing to evolve and become really a strategy firm
    - Poor management of the employees, with small bonuses and a tendency to save as much money as possible instead of improving the quality of life of people actually delivering the projects
    - “Cult of the Partner”: many of them perceive themselves as gods. In fact, they are Mr. No One in the industry and among clients, but still, watch out for their ego when in the room with them
    - Strict divisional structure, with no exposure to different industries
    - Bias toward PhD candidates: as the founder was an academic, the company favors PhD with no work experience in the real world instead of MBA or people with more relevant work experience, which is good, if you are a university, less so if you are a consulting firm

    Rat an das Management

Get out there and take a look at what other consulting firms (the actual top ones) do, it is enough to improve the mess in your hands
