Ich habe in Vollzeit bei Public Health England gearbeitet (Über 3 Jahre)

    Pros

Friendly, professional, and a great place to learn new knowledge and skills. Evidence based practice used at all times. I learnt a lot.

    Kontras

The commute was not good at all for me. Also being on call and still having to work the next day even if you were woken during the night, not at all appreciated by my family.

    Rat an das Management

Look at the on call system. Surely the consultants could do a bit more of the on call work, instead of everything having to be done by 1st on call. I sometimes worked 8 hours a day on Sat and Sundays whilst the consultant did nothing at all. ( well it depended who was on call with you) You could get very tired. No days off in lieu and then back to work on Monday was not really a healthy work life balance.

Ich arbeite in Vollzeit bei Public Health England (Über 10 Jahre)

    Pros

-Flexibility (very flexible, people sometimes simply don't turn up - no reason to why)
-Well resourced labs and computer systems
    -Parking on site
    -Canteen on site
-Very close to Colindale tube station - good transport links
-Site has lots of green spaces

    Kontras

-Incredibly toxic, management lack leadership , lack logic to their decision making and are constantly looking over their shoulder. As a result, top down bullying is fairly common.
-Morale is low and it impacts on most peoples mental health. This coupled with the bullying creates a very negative atmosphere!
-Restructuring within the microbiology division is moving at a glacial pace, again to due to poor management (2 years+ still nothing is in place).
-Zero career development if you have any scientific or academic ability
-Vast sums of money are wasted on poorly implemented services, again due to poor management and a complete lack of any accountability
-Incredibly top heavy management, lots of artificial titles to justify their position
-Constant contract and pension changes, each one, worse than the last.

    Rat an das Management

-New blood is needed in the organisation, particularly at the top (CEO included)
-We need strong, inspirational leaders in the organisation, people who are internationally recognised, qualified and have a clear plan.
-Bullying, undermining and overworking of competent staff needs to stop and is something that has to be taken seriously. It is top down from the senior management, call in some external body who has power to tackle this toxic culture.

    Pros

Enough variety in the job to keep your interest going.

    Kontras

    Rat an das Management

Just embrace the staff you have with their varied skills and experiences.

Ich arbeite in Vollzeit bei Public Health England (Über 8 Jahre)

    Pros

A flexible company to work for, if you are prepared to work hard and manage your own career, there are opportunities to progress if you are prepared to be proactive.

    Kontras

No pay progression, the salary you start on remains the same except for a possible 1% pay rise each year.

    Rat an das Management

    N/A

Ich arbeite in Vollzeit bei Public Health England

    Pros

The job is interesting and I have a diverse workload that covers statistics, analytical skills, project management and data science. I'm never bored - it's project work at speed, so prepare to push your skills to the limit.
I'm constantly learning new skills (Advanced statistics, R, SQL, Python, Arc GIS , GitHub, JIRA, Confluence etc). There are large teams with diverse age and cultural profiles, although it's still white middle class the further north you go. Friendly colleagues from an array of backgrounds with differing skill sets. There's lots of promotion potential, a young organisation that's still filling vacancies.

    Kontras

No pay rise, what you start on, you stay on... Hierarchy issues - Some people who are two grades up generally don't email you back or pick up the phone. So you have to get your manager to speak with that manager (time passing, hours wasted, money down the drain). Finally they come back with an answer that bears no resemblance to what you asked, causing communication issues. Still very white male middle class management. PHE would benefit from having some order (it's generally chaotic at an organisational level) and we would benefit from having 'Standard Operating Procedures'; project planning and strong leadership. At the moment everybody seems to come at tasks with a multitude of approaches and there is little consistency in methodology or approach. Turnover is very high - Everyday I seem to contribute to a leaving present and card... Matrix working and hot desking - not a fan. Clinical cubicle style desks where you can't have a plant, picture etc, prepare to be 'dehumanized'.

    Rat an das Management

Have a plan, and objectives which are embedded within an overall organisational project management strategy. Then make sure your managers are doing what they should be doing, rather than the endless meetings to say why a thing can't be done and the endless blame game. Shake up management and employ people so we have a more representative and diverse upper structure.

Ich arbeite in Vollzeit bei Public Health England (Über 5 Jahre)

    Pros

flexible working, nice colleagues, good support for issues in private life, good work/life balance, I am very lucky to be part of a great team

    Kontras

many short term contracts, endless paperwork, not much chance of progression, organisation is too big, so no connection to upper management, some people have moved up the ladder simply by being here for long enough

    Rat an das Management

give different parts of the organisation more independence (e.g. Porton)
