    Pros

    Good holiday entitlement and staff discount,especially once you get to 10 years service,and given vouchers for long term service.
    Management are easily approachable for any issues

    Poor pay,staff morale is low a lot of the times
    Asm that don’t come onto the floor and when they do ‘Support’ haven’t a clue what they are doing!
    Team leaders are expected too do too much for what they are paid!

    There needs to be more payroll to achieve everything that’s needs doing,especially now tasks get dropped onto you very late,1 payrise in the last 8 years for mgrs is unacceptable and a bonus scheme in place that is actually achievable.
    There are too many stores that don’t achieve plan,shut them and invest the money into the others
    The pressure put onto stores too gather emails/regs is a joke,yes these are important too move the business forward but need too understand customer don’t want too leave them as we bombard them with stuff!

    Pros

    + Co-workers and managers are usually very nice and the main reason people stay on
    + You can get lots of hours if you need them and if you can put up with your soul dying in the process
    + Generous staff discount with extra discount days around the holidays.
    + You're expected to do so much that it provides you with a lot of skills and things to put on your CV

    Kontras

    - Not worth the money; overworked, expected to be an expert at several jobs at once though you're barely trained

    - The matalan card- sometimes called a discount card or a reward card even though it seems to do neither.
    A ridiculous obsession with getting customers to sign up for it, you're allowed about 1 or 2 "bypasses" a day- customers going by without using or signing up for one. Impossible considering you'll have many customers each day who don't speak great English, who have hearing problems, who are children, or who are young adults who know better than to give out their details.
    Younger cashiers seem also reluctant to serve because of this- often many will pretend they don't see a customer in the queue, will busy themselves doing something else such as putting stock out, etc, hoping someone else will take the bypass instead. Not to mention the 20 questions you need to ask customers including upselling products of the week, which prolongs the time they're at the cash register, which makes the queue longer than it should be and agitates everyone involved.
    An awful practice overall that ruins productivity. I understand the managers don't have any say in this, it's a company-wide problem and some branches are stricter with it than others.

    - Management are nice and seem well-meaning, but aren't very considerate. Usually if you have a day off managers will take turns phoning you trying to pressure you to agree to work on them anyway.

    - Condescending and rude customers. Expect to have your mood for the rest of your day ruined quite often. People will complain to get their way because they know it works, talk down to you as if you're personally responsible for all the store's shortcomings, etc. Managers will always side with them. Though note this is generally a problem with retail in general, and not something specific to Matalan. Just a warning, the general public can be horrible, especially if you're younger.

    - Younger high school students will be worked and pressured just as hard and often spoken down to more even though they're earning less than half of the older workers.

    Hard to blame management when it's obviously people above them pressuring them to enforce awful policies, but;

    More recognition for good deeds. If you get 4 people in a day to sign up for the pointless Matalan card it should be worthy of some praise, but instead you just get reamed for the other ones you let go by without one.

    Take shoplifting prevention more seriously. I've never once seen anyone guarding the front door or checking what people are taking into the changing rooms.

    Get recycling bins or reduce the amount of needless packaging. The amount of waste that could've been recycled is disgusting.

    Stop rewarding awful customers so generously and encouraging their awful behaviour. If a horrible person decides they're never going to shop in our store again that should be seen as a positive outcome.

    The card system is an embarrassment i just want this to be my final sentence.

    The flexibility around shifts, they really try to work your hours around education/social activities
    The management and staff are all friendly and relaxed too

    A lot of responsibility is given, which is good, but you don't get an actual promotion so your pay stays the same

    Friendly co workers, discount goes up the longer u work for them (over 10yrs).. always busy..

    Kontras

    Divide between store management and team leaders is immense.. no incentive ..store management get Xmas lu day's team leaders get nothing..pay low for all you do.. no recognition used to do either earlies or lates cos store management don't want to do them.. rota goes up for area manager to see and then gets changed so store manager does no lates?? No life/work balance.. drop higher work load on you at last minute e.g offers day before or sale..

    Would love more of the management team out on shopfloor .doing something or helping instead of giving me a list of jobs for me to do on my own with no help.. ive seen the ups and downs of matalan over the years I'd love to actually lead a team rather than be on my own majority of the time
