Ich arbeite in Vollzeit bei Grayling (Weniger als ein Jahr)

    Pros

Grayling has gone through a transition over the past 12 months, but it feels like it has found a good groove. The west coast offices have a really interesting mix of FinTech, consumer, healthcare and enterprise clients and the teams are super focused on delivering for each one. In SF in particular the roster is growing almost weekly.

The agency blends a good mix of traditional media relations, digital content and public affairs, which I’ve found rare in Bay Area PR firms. I also like that management is open to new approaches and is super accessible.

    Kontras

Like most agencies, there’s a strong focus on client service which can lead to occasional long days. Likewise, as the company is very much in growth mode, teams can sometimes play “fast and loose,” but that actually appeals to me as it definitely opens up opportunities. Coordination between the offices also can be tough with different time zones.

    Rat an das Management

Focus on building the team and identifying high performers. There’s some great talent in the office that’s waiting to be unleashed. Communicate more with employees about company strategy and management changes across the agency. Lose Outlook and get Google!

    Pros

The biggest pro is exposure to corporate clients, and that is just about it.

    Kontras

The biggest con is day in day out people get hired and then they leave. Grayling hires brilliant minds only to do some shandy business behind working teams that just prompts most people to leave. They are not upfront with matters of employment. Their unethical way of doing things is what has made most of my former colleagues leave.

    Rat an das Management

I think the management needs restructuring

Ich habe in Vollzeit bei Grayling gearbeitet (Weniger als ein Jahr)

    Pros

    - Flexibility, including working from home at least one day and week and closed for the week between Christmas and New Year's
    - Great opportunity to build technology reporter relationships
    - You do not have to record and enter time at this agency

    Kontras

The work is entirely tactical and not at all strategic. The firm represents its success to clients in the number of stories placed and so the day to day is composed almost entirely of pitching. At one point I was told that the expectation was that I would come up with and push out two proactive pitches a week per client if they did not have news to announce - it was very alienating for my reporter contacts and personally stressful for me to constantly be coming up with pitches with no news or new content. Further, clients are encouraged to take any interview secured, regardless of whether the publication or topic is beneficial to the client's business ROI (and without regard to whether there's a potential risk in giving the interview). Last, the digital department is not at all integrated with the PR teams and there is no opportunity to plan and carry out integrated outreach campaigns, events, online activations or really anything that deviates from smile and dial traditional media outreach activities - it's clear that the founders do not come from a PR background and don't have a robust understanding of the services that other firms offer. As an employee, the work is not challenging or engaging on an intellectual level.

    Rat an das Management

Be more transparent that Atomic is a media relations firm, not a strategic communications/public relations firm, particularly when interviewing mid-level and senior staff that are used to providing more robust services to their clients.
