    * You can choose to work whenever you want at wherever you want.

    Kontras

    * Nearly not enough work to be even considered to be a side-job. Only think of working for them as a translator if you are already making enough money to pay your rent.

    - Clients are extremely difficult to contact, yet have the power to dismiss all of your work.

    Protect translators from clients who don't know any better. Demand that clients provide context, ideally to all projects, but at the very least for projects more than $50.

    If you are an experienced translator, it's a good opportunity for you to add an extra income stream.

    There's no cons as a part-time job, otherwise one language pair wouldn't give you enough jobs.

    Pros

    Great flexibility, work from home, can take time off whenever you want. If you do good work consistently, customers will often choose you as a "favorite" translator, which means you get first crack at their assignments. I find their ratings system (your "grade" on your work) to be very fair on the whole. The company, of course, loves diversity: its translators work all over the world. So many languages, so many cultures! This company is also a reliable way to get the experience needed to do other translation work.

    Kontras

    One downside is the fact that the pay is not great. However, they do all the work getting the jobs. You may also need to keep your schedule very loose; jobs come in at all hours of the day or night. The customer who needs the quick translation could be anywhere in the world, in any time zone. I often work in the middle of the night.

    Keep up the good management and the upbeat work atmosphere! There have been some minor wrinkles with the Translators Operations Team regarding the new QA process which can be discouraging, but I trust they will get ironed out in short order.

    - Easy to get work

    - Senior translator's views are entirely arbitrary and if they don't like how to translate, they will revoke your qualifications on a whim and will have to take qualifications test all over again

    - 0.02 cents per word? Really? I can make more doing freelance myself.

    Just close up shop already. You guys have a recipe for disaster and you don't listen to your guys anyway.

    Pros

    Lots of free time. Good platform, guidelines and style are defined. Other than that there are not a lot of things about working here that can be considered plus.

    Kontras

    Not enough work to make a living out of it. Accessing senior levels does not depend on language proficiency or quality of translation but on the evaluation by people who you would be competing with if you want to get paid the higher rate. I had perfect translations cancelled because of virtual mistakes that were not there, and there's no possibility to get reviewed. Meaning you'll never get there.

    Change the way in which accessing higher levels of translation is done. Letting senior translators review tests makes the senior level impossible to access, meaning that you'll be stuck with the same low-quality translators and leave no room for improvement.

    Pros

    - Low barrier to entry and work at home.
    - Can start and stop whenever you want.
    - Easy thing to add to a resume.

    Kontras

    - Loooooooow pay and little work. If you're looking for even semi-consistent work, turn back.
    - Poor quality control of Senior Translators. I've had submissions rejected by Senior Translators who clearly have a poor grasp of English.
    - Poor policing of Senior Translators. Like mentioned in a previous review, I get the feeling that sometimes my work gets rejected for the sole reason of Senior Translators taking out the competition and getting more work.
    - Gengo wants very rigid, word-for-word, sentence-for-sentence translations. Translation doesn't work that way.

    reliable pay. easy work .flexible work.

    i submitted a negative review two weeks ago, entitled 'this company is a horror.' if this company were healthy, the directors and senior mgmt would have taken it as a springboard for discussion and for root-cause analysis of many similar employee concerns expressed here about unfair treatment. but alas, no such self-reflection seems to be happening. instead, the ceo has chosen a path of 'reputation management' instead, asking me to remove my review.
    i think there has developed a inappropriate, unhealthy, and unsustainable power imbalance between mgmt and senior translators , and regular translators.

    Pros

    Clean interface, good guides for translators, regular newsletters. They seem to have high standards for choosing translators, and they are very transparent.

    Kontras

    Not a single job in over a year for my language pair. I haven't made a cent since working there.

    Try to recruit work for every language pair so that your freelancers aren't frustrated at lack of work.

    Fast payments via PayPal and Skrill, very fast and kind customer support. Nice way to start your translation career. Variety of jobs.

    Kontras

    Way too low Standard rates, too many translators for each language pair compared to the number of available jobs. Community forums not very active and work is too individual.

    Rat an das Management

    Create working groups made of translators working on chunks of a common big project and make them communicate and work together. Improve automatic QA interface. Don't hire unnecessary freelancers.
