Ich habe in Vollzeit bei Gengo gearbeitet

    Pros

Opportunity to work in Tokyo. Interesting problems to solve and huge amount of data. Multicultural environment. 6 months paid language lessons.

    Kontras

Insane internal politics, and management-level dishonesty. Decisions are made without your input, and then you’re told afterward what the decision is. The communication is top-down. In interviews they might tell you that it's a flexible startup environment which is not really true. It seems they only want developers that do what they’re told, and on deadlines. Developers who are passionate about languages or whom have interesting ideas and want to innovate are not really wanted.

    Rat an das Management

Should listen to people more and not just trust whatever the managers says.

Ich arbeite bei Gengo (Weniger als ein Jahr)

    Pros

You can work anytime you have spare time from home.

    Kontras

Not enough tasks and kind of hard to grab a job on the dashboard.

    Rat an das Management

Would be better if they can improve customer service.

Ich habe in Vollzeit bei Gengo gearbeitet

    Pros

Opportunity to work in Tokyo without needing to speak Japanese. Strong engineering team. Interesting problems to solve. Good challenges and nice office environment.

    Kontras

Insane internal politics, and management-level dishonesty. There are also some inexperienced managers, which would have been okay, if they weren't also so full of themselves and purposefully breaking down others (in their teams!) to make themselves look good.

„Not bad but no incentive to do well.”

    Pros

Fundamentally, Gengo is probably one of the easier ways to get into translating - simply take (and pass) their tests and start translating.

Unlike some agencies, they pay on-time and there is a lot less hassle.

    Kontras

Professional translation agencies (note: I said professional ones - there are plenty of unprofessional ones around) have translations evaluated by two native speakers - I translate Japanese to English, so mine would be checked by a native Japanese speaker and a native English speaker. Gengo doesn't do this (they don't even tell you the native language of their checkers). Their tests aren't even checked by native speakers of both languages. I distinctly remember issues regarding 「」 being translated (J->E translators know this can be a huge issue).

Fundamentally, for me, Gengo suffers from one issue that most translation agencies suffer from - the concept that sentence A in one language must have an equivalent in the other language, and it must be included. Whilst this is true, it really limits your ability to produce natural translations and instead you get something that most people either gloss over because it sounds like it was written by a dolt (Gengo checkers probably have to look it up in a dictionary).

    Pros

As a translator you can take on as much or as little work as you want.
    Website design is fairly intuitive.
Periodic evaluations of your translations are helpful for those with little experience looking to improve their skills.

    Kontras

Pay is way lower than the industry standard, making this unfeasible as your primary employment.

    Rat an das Management

Find a way to increase translator pay. The current rates are so dirt cheap it's practically slave labor.

    Pros

In general, it is a good platform for building experience in translation. There are professional translators who review work and give very good advice for improvement.

    Kontras

The pay is poor and the work infrequent. Overall there is very little incentive to work on the website consistently.

    Rat an das Management

Increase overall pay and introduce a structured system to incentivize work on more technical documents.

    „Gengo Translation”

Ich arbeite in Teilzeit bei Gengo (Über 3 Jahre)

    Pros

Great way to get started out and build your confidence. Nice work at home job. Although the pay is low it is good training for the beginning translator, they rate your work and explain what you did wrong, in this way it can almost be considered paid schooling.

    Kontras

Pay is very low. Only .03 cents per word for basic translations, which many times aren't really that basic... Once you work up to a Pro level when they pay .08 cents per word and the workload increases. On the basic level there are not very many jobs available, and when they do become available you really need to be quick before someone else comes along and takes it. Another con is that the editors are not always fair in their judgments and there is o way to explain or contest a bad score...

    Rat an das Management

Try to keep more balance between number of translators and actual work to do. Allow one to contest or explain why they did certain "mistakes" that gave them bad scores.

    Pros

    - Can work whenever you like.
    - No minimum hours.
    - No need to bid on jobs.

    Kontras

    - At $0.02 a character for standard and $0.05 a character for pro jobs, the pay is too low.
    - Senior translators have occasionally reviewed my translations incorrectly.
    - Deadlines can be very tight.
