Ich arbeite in Teilzeit bei Gengo (Über 3 Jahre)

    Pros

If you are an experienced translator, it's a good opportunity for you to add an extra income stream.

    Kontras

There's no cons as a part-time job, otherwise one language pair wouldn't give you enough jobs.

    Rat an das Management

    Hope you find more clients.

Ich habe in Vollzeit bei Gengo gearbeitet (mehr als ein Jahr)

    Pros

    - Motivated, smart co-workers who are passionate about what they do
    - Nice location in Tokyo
    - Good concept, easy to get behind

    Kontras

    - Unfortunate management - mostly nice people, but inexperienced and not uniformly skilled to manage
    - COO is the single most terrible person I've ever worked with in my professional career before or since
    - Often there's a mismatch between the strengths of the service and customers sold, leading to operational headaches
    - Dev resources go to increasing sales, usually not improving core platform, leaving Operations teams with not enough tools to do their jobs well
    - Lack of diversity in leadership, especially gender

    Rat an das Management

Listen to your employees, and be mindful about how you treat people.

    Pros

Great flexibility, work from home, can take time off whenever you want. If you do good work consistently, customers will often choose you as a "favorite" translator, which means you get first crack at their assignments. I find their ratings system (your "grade" on your work) to be very fair on the whole. The company, of course, loves diversity: its translators work all over the world. So many languages, so many cultures! This company is also a reliable way to get the experience needed to do other translation work.

    Kontras

One downside is the fact that the pay is not great. However, they do all the work getting the jobs. You may also need to keep your schedule very loose; jobs come in at all hours of the day or night. The customer who needs the quick translation could be anywhere in the world, in any time zone. I often work in the middle of the night.

    Rat an das Management

Keep up the good management and the upbeat work atmosphere! There have been some minor wrinkles with the Translators Operations Team regarding the new QA process which can be discouraging, but I trust they will get ironed out in short order.

Ich habe in Vollzeit bei Gengo gearbeitet (mehr als ein Jahr)

    Pros

    International Environment.
Passionate group of engineers focused on cutting edge technology.
Great opportunities to work on a growing dynamic product.
    Fantastic work location.
    Great hackathons.

    Kontras

As with any product with a solid customer base there is some minor technical dept.
For working in the Tokyo office you must like Tokyo.

    Rat an das Management

Keep hiring great engineers and stay open to trying new things.

Ich habe in Vollzeit bei Gengo gearbeitet (mehr als ein Jahr)

    Pros

There were free snacks and lunches on Fridays and Lunch and Learns on Fridays were fun. The vibe in the office is a unique startup in Tokyo to have the Silicon Valley style and they are always trying new things/tech to make work smoothly. Gengo also has paid language lessons (for the first 3 months) which makes sense for a language company.

    Kontras

The transparency could be improved. Glossing over meeting room glass seemed like an odd move. The Lunch and Learns used to be done more by fellow employees but recently changed to outside guests which weren't always as fun as learning about fellow co-workers. The hardest challenge is to reduce the gap in communication between teams which is not always the best.

    Rat an das Management

Gengo has a good product, a good brand, great workers and nice development core. Use these strengths even more to advance the brand further. Your company should give non-active translators non-translation jobs to reactivate them to earn money outside of just translation. Gengo spent money to get them, so why not put them to more work?

Ich habe in Vollzeit bei Gengo gearbeitet (mehr als ein Jahr)

    Pros

    - Relatively decent pay
    - English work environment
    - Convenient office location
    - Little to no overtime

    Kontras

    - Everything else
    - Management

The company is run by two friends who seem to be clinging to what Gengo was and not directing it into what it can/could be. The CEO is out of the office most of the days and when he is in, he doesn't inspire the team with his actions/words. He tries to do it through his "fun" activities. Since he is not in the office much, that leaves his buddy and COO to basically run the place. Too bad considering the COO is a walking HR violation who laughs off the inappropriate things he says or does by simply saying "I'm from New Jersey, this is how people behave there."

    Rat an das Management

You had your chance to learn from the outside/investor Japanese sales team that came in and observed Gengo for almost a year. You should have handed over the reigns to them and you two step aside. Since you won't do that, take a look in the mirror and try to grasp why the turnover rate is so high. On paper, the positives listed above would be a dream for almost anyone, it's just dealing with the management that is the mental drain that makes people want to leave. And get some more actionable quarterly goals, not vague hipster-sounding religion-invoking catch phrases like "build an industry-agnostic platform".

    Pros

They pay on time. They give enough time to complete the projects. The idea of the system is quite good.

    Kontras

The reviewers are not fair at all.
If a customer doesn't like your translation doesn't have to pay for it, however they already have the base from which they may build upon. And they have it for free, which is extremely unfair.
    Rise the reward per word.

Ich habe in Vollzeit bei Gengo gearbeitet

    Pros

    well funded
everyone except management team is nice.
    some benefits/perks are nice

    Kontras

they say they work "silicon valley style", but don't trust them. they only "sillion valley style" going home 6 pm flat, without getting anything done.

    lots of stupid meetings
    lots of internal politics.

management team have no relevant experience, no idea what to do, no commitment, no effort, no passion, no decision makings, and extremely conservative. they seem want to be paid well and stay where they are as much as they can.
your hard work never pays off here

if you are looking for a job here, make sure to ask more details from someone who work/used to work here before you sign anything.

    Rat an das Management

consider all quit at once and hire better management team or sell out the business before it's too late

Akt. Mitarbeiter - Korean-English Translator in Seoul (Südkorea)

    Pros

Clean interface, good guides for translators, regular newsletters. They seem to have high standards for choosing translators, and they are very transparent.

    Kontras

Not a single job in over a year for my language pair. I haven't made a cent since working there.

    Rat an das Management

Try to recruit work for every language pair so that your freelancers aren't frustrated at lack of work.
