Ich habe in Vollzeit bei Dalberg gearbeitet

    Pros

Everyone cares about you and talks about your brand of impact, how to support you and how to help you bring your whole self to work. Super smart people. And Dalberg is growing very fast so it's exciting.

    Kontras

Partners don't scope projects as well as they could and can be too accommodating with demanding clients. I maybe worked on average 50 or 60 hours a week.

    Rat an das Management

Do more staffing across regions. Dalberg offers a global experience that makes it different from other firms in Africa and special and I heard a lot about global staffing when I got an offer to join but most of my projects were in my region if not with the partners in my office. Maybe give everyone the chance to do a project with the GMP because it would be a big thing to learn from Yana and be part of a team with people from different offices.

Ich arbeite in Vollzeit bei Dalberg (Über 3 Jahre)

    Pros

1/ Evidence based approach focusing on delivering outcomes rather than just outputs. Dalberg offers a broad platform- strategy consulting, research, impact investment, human centered design, big data, all under one large global roof. This enables it to take a holistic approach to complex / multi-dimensional problems, empathize with end users and deliver the outcomes they need.

2/ Dalberg provides a strong platform for individuals to grow and develop strategy consulting skills, deep sector knowledge, while also providing a springboard for a variety of external pathways- post graduate studies, joining the ‘client side’ , entrepreneurship and freelancing. Many people at Dalberg have ‘sprung’ from this platform to successfully grow internally and externally. Not many organizations proactively provide guidance and mentoring to make these choices; Dalberg not only does this but also continues to support and provide guidance in the long term

3/ An open, friendly and diverse culture. For example, ‘partner office hours’ where partners are available for informal one to one discussions; global, regional and cohort retreats with a good mix of office discussions and fun; weekly all staff meetings to disseminate on going project learnings and share the pipeline of work; regular ‘learning lunches’ to share knowledge, discuss ideas, discuss internal initiatives on gender, diversity, inclusiveness etc.

4/ A can do / entrepreneurial environment made of a strong team of smart people, with a genuine passion for sustainable impact. This includes building long term relationships with clients, taking an ecosystem perspective to solutions and pushing our thinking beyond strategy to longer term implementation.

5/ A staff led model supported by strong operations, HR and finance teams, led by a focused and passionate COO who plays a crucial role in representing the voice of all Dalberg staff, as part of the management team.

    Kontras

1/ A tendency to work predominantly in ones home region. Dalberg should leverage its global platform and networks to take on more global work and facilitate global project teams

2/ While there has been considerable movement to ensure global alignment of internal policies, there remains some way to go in terms of forming a minimum baseline of policies in all offices

3/ Asia continues to grow rapidly presenting challenges particularly in terms of administrative processes, regular coaching and training and as mentioned above, facilitating global opportunities.

    Rat an das Management

You have a unique, supportive and collaborative culture. Your continued growth in Asia makes it increasingly important to align on policies, initiatives and further enable all staff to engage with the Dalberg global platform. Please continue to focus on these areas while continuing your support and encouragement for us to take ownership of our growth as an organisation and as individuals.

Ich arbeite in Vollzeit bei Dalberg

    Pros

*Opportunity to engage in different sectors and types of projects

*A dynamic place to work, driven mostly by junior people who are passionate to learn about the development sector

*A strong set of managers. While the manager cohort has different styles, abilities and experience, it is nice to have the option of working with different manager styles

*Open, friendly with office level discussions on a variety of topics

    Kontras

    * No diversity at management level in Asia. Dalberg is the kind of place where a few people decide whether you are a good fit or not. In addition to how smart they are, people are judged by the school they went to, their accent, their clothing, their political views and whether they make management feel important enough. If you do not fit in, there is no pathway for you to succeed and you will be made to feel unworthy and dumb

*Dalberg Asia constantly loses inspiring, smart and experienced people, especially women. It seems that women join at levels below their experience whereas men, with similar experience, are offered more senior positions and they are made to feel that they are not good enough to make it. This a huge loss as these women are smart, experienced, are not afraid to challenge management, show empathy, are role models for so many of us, have successfully led teams on some of the most interesting projects . It is clear that there is no room for women like this in Asia. Management does not care and sometimes demonstrates sexist behavior, particularly to junior staff and operations staff (all of who are female). Gender balance is a serious problem. Sad and hypocritical as this place markets itself as setting the standard for gender equality

*Unprofessional behavior including showing public display of affection between people in the management team, project managers at office gatherings. This adds to the sexism as male partners are fawned on by female colleagues, it also makes people uncomfortable and also shows who is favored

*Based on its lack of diversity and superiority complex, Dalberg does not lead by example and therefore, it cannot claim to be superior, especially in the development sector. But this region is part of a global firm and so it gets away with it. A shame that the Asia office behaves very differently from other offices

*If you truly want to work with a range of people who are fair and supportive, show that they trust and respect you and want you to succeed, do not join this organization

    Rat an das Management

It is time you took a hard look at yourselves. You continue to lose people that are smart, experienced and have excellent coaching skills. You need to take corrective measures and soon before the Asia office falls apart. Understand that you also do not have all the skills that you conveniently hold others too. Your lack of interest in coaching and supporting says so much about your ability to lead. Stop being so defensive and pulling rank when questioned. Do away with fancy job titles like COO which mean nothing or at least hire people that are smart and invested in how your staff feel. Be inclusive as opposed to demanding to always being the center of attention which makes most of us feel like our opinions do not matter

Ich arbeite in Vollzeit bei Dalberg (Weniger als ein Jahr)

    Pros

The best thing about working at Dalberg is its people. The company attracts people who are very generous at heart and are genuinely motivated to live a life of service to humanity. People do not work here for money or fame but because they care and they want to challenge the status quo, propose bold and smart solutions, and be true to their own principles and ideals.

    Kontras

Work life balance is hard to achieve as projects are often intense and lead to long nights and frequent travel making it difficult to settle down in one place.

Ich habe in Vollzeit bei Dalberg gearbeitet (Über 5 Jahre)

    Pros

Dalberg is a truly unique place to work. I have had the privilege to work there for many years and professionally grow at a pace I would not have been able to anywhere else. I'd summarize the pros into 3 points:
    1) The people. Unmistakably, this is Dalberg's number one strength. Its full of young, energetic, smart, impact driven and socially minded people.
    2) The projects. As a consultant you get to work on a variety of very different and very interesting projects, all with a purpose of helping the client do good.
    3) The approach. The consulting toolkit is extremely powerful: applying an analytical and strategic approach to the questions the client has.

    Kontras

I see two main disadvantages, linked to the nature of the job:
    1) You are an advisor, and hence in the end, the final decisions are made by the client.
    2) You are one step removed from the final beneficiary. The impact Dalberg has is by helping the client be better at helping the final beneficiary. If you want to work directly with the final beneficiaries, this is not the place for you.

Ich arbeite in Vollzeit bei Dalberg (mehr als ein Jahr)

    Pros

Nowhere other than Dalberg can you gain the invaluable skills of consulting working across a wide variety of social impact projects such as reforms for international NGOs, or working with smallholder farmers in a rural village. The best aspect of Dalberg is probably the people and community - an incredibly down-to-earth and intelligent group that loves to have fun. The compensation is some of the best that you can find in the development sector.

    Kontras

The job comes along with the stress you would find at most consultancies, although the management is quite conscious of this and takes an active interest in mental health.

Ich arbeite in Vollzeit bei Dalberg (mehr als ein Jahr)

    Pros

As the premier strategic advisory firm in development, Dalberg's strongest value proposition is the chance to have real impact on big development agendas while learning top-notch skills (transferable like problem-solving, excel, and powerpoint and specifically in development) alongside inspiring colleagues.

-- Impact: From the very earliest stage of your career, you get the chance to work on crucial global development engagements with high-profile clients like international organizations, high-level government officials, corporations or foundations/NGOs.
-- Skill-building: You get structured training and continuous coaching in both transferable skills in the consulting toolkit as well as gaining deep expertise in various development areas (ICT, education, energy, health, agriculture, etc.)
-- Social: Your colleagues are inspiring top performers with backgrounds from top schools and organizations who are as committed to building a more inclusive and sustainable world as you are - and who have often started a business or social enterprise somewhere in the developing world, won a number of crazy awards, and traveled to 50+ countries.

    Kontras

The downsides of working as a management consultant, also at Dalberg, are primarily long working hours, lots of travel, and the challenges of scaling a rapidly growing organization.

However, given the content of work and your colleagues, long hours and travel really haven't bothered me too much. Getting the chance to go on long weekends in Kenya, South Africa, Mozambique or wherever you're working this month could also be seen as a definite pro!

    Rat an das Management

-- Maintain entrepreneurial and value-based culture
-- Continue move from 'just consulting' to long-term partnerships with key players, including in implementation, and building independent spin-out organizations
-- Focus more on governance issues in development, including in the fragile states wherein extreme poverty is increasingly concentrated
-- Invest more in organizational processes to make sure everything administrative just works
