Ich habe in Vollzeit bei CNN gearbeitet

    Pros

You will work with people who will become like family, the company has great name recognition, and you will create news you can be proud of. CNN domestic is well-run.

    Kontras

CNN International is poorly run by people with no management experience. They promote based on favoritism and nepotism, not merit or quality. Tony Maddox is running CNN International like a mobster, creating high turnover and unmotivated employees.

    Rat an das Management

Invest in real managers, stop letting people from the field "retire" into positions at HQ in Atlanta when they have no idea how to manage a team. And investigate the top brass at CNN International for unfair hiring and promotion.

Ich habe in Vollzeit bei CNN gearbeitet (Über 8 Jahre)

    Pros

Wonderful travel opportunities globally, fun workplace, pretty good pay if you stick with it after 20 years in mid-level management.

    Kontras

Tough to move up or laterally for most, lack of women leaders who have true work-life balance, jealous and petty colleagues who will sabotage and bosses afraid to correct this or protect smart people. International side needs more diverse Americans, and upper management seems too British -BBC of a culture, hiring mostly from the UK, and senior CNNUSA management too busy dealing with their issues to truly speak up and make a change, or promote from within.

    Rat an das Management

Nurture people you have there vs laying them off! Develop talent, don't be threatened by the intellectuals amongst you. Learn from people under and around you and don't only hire younger, cheaper parts-it will not advance CNN into changing times, what made CNN great was the news and coverage of global news-air more international on domestic. Address the perpetual Atlanta fear issues (will CNN stay there or will it go)?, too many people say they are laying low because of fear of being laid off, too many unhealthy rumors and people in cubicles not always working.

Ich habe in Vollzeit bei CNN gearbeitet (Über 3 Jahre)

    Pros

The pay was very good, the PTO & benes amazing, facilities excellent, security on par with most police departments

    Kontras

I've been a newsroom manager for many years, but wasn't in my position at CNN. There are some AMAZING colleagues, and some managers I wouldn't hire to be an intern.

Managers are OFTEN promoted from very limited career experiences (sometimes solely at CNN), and it shows. These managers who've never worked at another news organization, are often petty, weak leaders, sometimes even after being sent to Poynter's Leadership Academy or other leadership training.

Rather than look at each employee's strengths and weaknesses, management behavior largely depends on current mood, and whether the direct report is in a particular clique. I've seen MANY quality people pushed out because of a personality conflict between themselves and a direct report, when a good manager would work to resolve the issue and regain the quality work from that employee.

I saw colleagues who were treated horribly for the most ridiculous reasons, often outside their control. I also saw managers give direction to all direct reports, then give opposing direction to someone whose life they simply want to make more difficult, or even to push a particular person to resign.

I walked out that door with a promise...to NEVER subject myself to such an unhealthy environment again. You may end up with a good manager, but they are few in that newsroom.

Don't make the mistake of thinking you can leave stressors at the door of the CNN newsroom . Work life at CNN will ABSOLUTELY bleed over into your personal life. That's an unfortunate promise I'm now qualified to make.

    Rat an das Management

HOLD YOUR MANAGERS AND SUPERVISORS ACCOUNTABLE! Require them to demonstrate they are CAPABLE of resolving personnel issues, or replace them with someone who can. You simply can NOT have healthy working environment, if you allow managers free reign to do what they wish based on whims, or worse. Anything less, will see quality work continue to decline, the attitudes of employees continue to turn sour, and the environment turn more and more caustic.
