    Pros

    Black Sun is a fantastic place to work, and your team-mates really are second to none. The work is engaging and challenging, and you get to work with some of the most interesting companies in the country. There are great learning and development opportunities, and plenty of ways that you can stretch yourself. There is a great sense of camaraderie, and it is incredibly stimulating to be able to go to work each day to... do interesting and fun work with clever people.

    Continue to work on balancing out the work across the year - while it is the nature of the sector that work can be quite seasonal, it can be a proper hard shift at times. Engage more with senior employees - there is lots of experience there.

    Black Sun have a really talented and inspiring team, it's a great place to learn a broad range of skills. You will receive the best training, with excellent career progression opportunities. Black Sun people are always in high-demand. A blue-chip client list and interesting work across all aspects of stakeholder communications. Opportunities to travel and spend time working in Singapore. Good benefits package,... which has recently been improved to create a better work/life balance. Regular performance reviews and team catch-ups. I really like the HR portal. Great culture and team spirit, the people are what make Black Sun.

    Pros

    Black Sun is a truly meritocratic business where you get out what you put in. Real talent is spotted then well nurtured and rewarded, with people promoted quickly to reflect their capabilities and efforts. The team spirit and attitude of the people is absolutely incredible, amazing support for each other especially in challenging times. Agencies are tough places to work with some very long hours but that is to... be expected and Black Sun is hardly different to any other top end agency in terms of workload and expectations. The difference is more in the way people support each other through these times which most agencies can’t say. The clients that Black Sun work with are unparalleled. This is a great credit to the quality of the work that Black Sun’s teams deliver and also is a great opportunity for employees to work with the biggest companies out there. Finally, the business has a good social aspect with regular drinks/events put on by the company (monthly), two big parties a year at Christmas and Summer, and you’ll always find a group of people in the locals on a Friday. People make deep friendships at Black Sun that last longer than their time at the business.

    The workload is challenging at busy times and, whilst many people have stayed and continued to work through tough hours for a number of years, this is not for everyone and does need to be addressed by the Board as it cannot be said to be fully sustainable. The employee package is average for the market but Black Sun is a premium agency looking for the best people in the market so should consider offering a... corresponding premium package. Be better than other agencies, not simply ‘as good’.

    Key thing is to reduce the hours/workload during the busy periods, some can handle it but others can’t and that doesn’t mean that they can’t add great value. It will also result in more energy outside of the busy times and help the business to grow across the cycle. Maintain true openness and transparency as much as is possible. The business is full of bright leaders who understand and know how to take the business... forward. Trust and reward them to do so.

    Great management and lots of company events along with option to work from home. 4:30 pm finish on a Friday. Located at Fulham Palace, Black Sun has a stable, fun and engaging work atmosphere. Plenty of opportunities for growth and advancement. I feel lucky to have amazing colleagues and supportive management who have years of experience and extensive knowledge. Hands on Directors that are approachable, engaged,... and invested, thus making it a great place to work for. Stability, growth, management, Director’s support, work from home, Friday breakfast and social events.

    Pros

    I worked at Black Sun for just under a year and if I didn't need to relocate, I'm sure I would still be working here. There is a great opportunity to learn at Black Sun, the board members are all very approachable with an open door policy and I found that they always listened to my opinion and worked very closely with me to solve any problems I came across. The location is stunning, set in the heart of Fulham... Palace with amazing grounds - brilliant during the summer! The team I worked in was also great - lot's going on to help and support the business and plenty of ideas in place for future development, which was led by the Talent Manager and L&D specialist.

    Pros

    Colleagues become like a family and many friendships bloom, they are the main source of support. The coffee machine is great, as is breakfast on Friday and it's a good chance to have a conversation with people from different departments that you don't often get to see. Also, there are a lot of big name clients.

    This is not a first class communications agency of 'storytellers'; it is an annual report sweatshop. The company prides itself on David (CEO) and HR's 'listening' and 'door always open', but this is simply untrue. By opening up to management about concerns/ issues you risk them terminating your employment (there are known cases). People disappear often, and farewells are usually held weekly (considerable in an... office of around 100) for those who are managed out of the business or who decide to take a job elsewhere. Turnover of about 40% per year and a constant hiring of almost all job roles indicates the unhealthy culture within. That unhealthy culture consists of management not trusting employees, the CEO's autocratic management style and desperation for more revenue at whatever cost, endless processes to achieve simple tasks, being asked to lie when meeting potential clients about length of time with company and even job title (given that nearly all employees are 'new' - this also creates big issues as skilled employees are overloaded with work). And of course, the hours. The insane work hours, including weekends are considerably longer than other agencies. It is NOT compensated, despite what HR will say and not recognised in a meaningful way. During this busy period, you will encounter people crying in meeting rooms, at their desks, in the coffee room from sheer exhaustion, stress, burnout. Mental health is treated as a hassle (physical health too) and people joke daily about suicide. An emailed link to a mental health service is as far as management will go to act for the swathe of employees needing assistance. Those who 'survive' are workaholics; hard people with a talent for manipulation and are often promoted to manage other people not because they have any skill or inclination for it, but because of the high turnover have become veterans. They seek talented people who are then not given the time or resource to do the great work they are capable of. Do not work here.

    The Board could be improved with additions from outside the business - this could assist with ethical factors and ensure autocracy is reigned in. Check in with your conscience and ask yourself if unkindness and distrust is really the way to treat your employees. Also, staff in all departments are overwhelmed due to lack of resource. People need to tend to their lives outside of The Black Sun Way in order to achieve... results at work.

    Pros

    The people at Black Sun are bright, hardworking, kind and supportive. Some big name clients. A refreshed and approachable HR team that really wants the best for employees (much needed).

    Very poor employee package in terms of annual leave, pension and perks. Pay seems to be average for the industry. The culture at Black Sun is corporate and top down with a dictator leadership style. Plenty of employees are able to navigate this and are fine at Black Sun, but others aren't and seem to work quite timidly. There's a real lack of trust from management towards employees. Not a culture where... your ideas are welcome - people tend to wait for instructions rather than collaborate/share their point of view. Too many unhappy faces and burnt out employees - main causes are a 'get it done' culture despite capacity issues being foreseeable months in advance, lack of investment in employee development, tiny staff social budgets, and a sense that management is well aware of all this but not willing to address it. There are some well-intentioned and hopeful employees trying to drive change, but this tends to be thwarted by the top. The agency regularly talks about a different future and the changes on the horizon, but very little time or money is invested in making changes happen. The agency positions itself as a creative stakeholder engagement agency, but it is really an annual reporting house. There's a bit of a shock when you join as the website, JDs and communication on social media don't marry up with the reality. A very traditional business that operates to maximise profit without recognising the value in investing in its workforce (for example) as a driver for this.

    Cyclical delivery patterns is something all agencies face. Hire a workflow manager and leverage freelance support during busy times - this is standard practice in agencies. Squeezing more out of existing employees shouldn't be an option. Invest in employees - e.g. Improve the employee package, acknowledge the amount of hard work by reducing workloads and giving TOIL. Empower and collaborate with your employees..., rather than instructing them. Make changes before you start talking about them so that the agency is not misrepresenting itself in the market. Step out from areas that fall under HR's remit.
