Pros

I have worked at Relay for over 7 years now and it is the best company I have ever worked in for the following reasons: A team orientated, friendly, professional working environment where you feel that the company really cares about you. The level of support provided by line managers and more experienced colleagues is exceptional. Senior management are extremely approachable. Brilliant for young grads. Skill levels are fast tracked with working on live projects. there is a buddy/mentor scheme for new people making learning easier and quicker. Very friendly atmosphere, people are very helpful and considerate of each other. High levels of staff loyalty - many of the team have worked for 10-20 years at Relay. This shows that you can have a life long career in the company. Many staff wouldn't consider leaving, As I said this is the best company I have worked for and I wouldn't consider leaving any time soon Exciting projects with global brands using the latest technologies. There have been some amazing projects recently that you can really get your teeth into. Excellent opportunities for career progression for employee e.g. senior and team lead roles Learning and development - There is a coaching/mentoring culture within the company which expedites learning. There are no restrictions on training and personal development is fully supported. Team leads are also provided with recognized qualifications in leadership and management. Relay also pays for people to complete their degrees in software engineering. I am just back from a 2 day course. There is a significant amount of autonomy/empowerment allowed whilst high levels of support support around you. I can get on with my work but there is always there if I need help. The reward and recognition package is extremely motivational. Relay is one of the few companies out there that offers overtime and there is also a brilliant quarterly bonus. It really makes a difference. The salary sacrifice schemes are useful too e.g. train travel, cycle to work. Also if staff are recognized for their achievements e.g. doing well in a course. There is a social committee who organize pretty good events e.g. darts, comedy nights, pizza/curry nights. The office is in a great location, close to the train/bus and city centre. The office itself is really unique, quirky, a Victorian building that has lots of character and air conditioning so it is always at a perfect temperature. Overall, I would have no hesitation in recommending Relay Software to anyone.

Kontras

Too many buns and cakes - if it is your birthday you get the buns. There is limited parking but not really an issue as there is parking across the street.

Pros

Standard benefits - paid overtime and a decent bonus scheme which brought the salary up a bit.

Kontras

Salary was below average (even with the bonus and overtime) and not as competitive as other IT companies. There was limited progress. QA was a fractured team as I found it catty and dominated by contentious characters, making it an unpleasant work environment for the others they targeted. QA management were not effective in dealing with the issues and looked like they made things worse with the approach taken. It was a pretty toxic work place with difficulties in managing the people within the team in an effective manner. Dealing with issues in a professional way was seemingly not a priority. The QA office was a grim and depressing space in an attic with limited light because there was an insistence that the lights where kept off by management. This created an unhealthy workplace and wasn't challenged by any other management in the building whilst I was there as far as I know. QA has a high staff turn over with a lot of people resigning within a year. Several walked away because conditions became so dire for them. Essentially it was made difficult for them to properly integrate into the QA team. The sickness level was also something I thought was questionable too. Training and support is minimal. The system is not smooth enough for the approach of learn as you go. Support meant continuously interrupting to ask other team members for help which irritated them and probably made tensions amongst the team worse. I wouldn't recommend QA.
