    Pros

    supportive, helpful team and manager

    Kontras

short term contracts, sometimes extended but too late (already got another job), lots of part time (yes good) jobs but poorly paid (can't manage on salary), irony that well paid jobs aren't offered as job share/ part time, losing good staff constantly because of pay/short contracts, have subsequently heard that 2 others from team have left and they have a new manager who is struggling - years of really good work about to disintegrate and come to nothing

    Rat an das Management

review contract lengths/pay, support managers better, make more well paid jobs available part time

    Pros

Great colleagues and very supportive management.

    Kontras

Quite bureaucratic although this is may be reflective of the sector.

    Pros

    Dedicated and passionate staff.
Flexible working - manage own hours, work from home when necessary.
Managers understand balance of work & home life - eg working around school runs and sick children.
    Toil given for overtime.
Excellent, high standard of training and plenty of opportunity for training and development.
Society promotes career progression among staff.
    Pension and health benefits.

    Kontras

Managers are low paid therefore poor or inexperienced managers are a problem. Good managers leave for higher paid jobs.
Pay lower than other positions in similar charities (eg Marie Curie).
Lack of understanding & support from managers due to them often being based in different locations to staff.
Some of the office bases are in very poor conditions whilst others are much nicer.
Staff expected to achieve the impossible - given unachievable targets with unacceptably low budgets, making failure inevitable.
Lots of time wasted on badly managed and planned team meetings.

    Rat an das Management

Provide proper, comprehensive and worthwhile supervision to support your staff and make them feel that they matter.
Plan team meetings to make the most of them.

    Pros

    Some colleagues were very helpful

    Kontras

Poor management. The person I had been working for had recruited for the position 8 times in 7 years which I was not aware of until I started in the job. At first all was going well (although on my first day in the job she did not come into the office and I was inducted by another admin person - badly) Then after a couple of months I started to be treated less well. No guidance on some of the things I should have been doing. Yearly reports I knew nothing about and even sending out Christmas cards. I was berated for not doing these when I did not know that these needed to be done. To be honest, she was very unpopular in the office and people dreaded her coming into the office (when she graced us with her presence). She would come in like a bull in a china shop.

I left in the end because it was impacting on my health too much and during my period of sick leave I had little contact with her so felt like I was being ignored and not cared for by the company.

I would have complained to HR about my treatment but the HR department is very disjointed and they are very dismissive of any complaints and I knew that all the information would be sent back to my manager.

    Rat an das Management

Look after your staff and give them avenues to complain if they need to without the fear that it will be taken against you. And if a member of staff if off sick, make the effort to meet with them and help them back to work.

    Pros

I've worked for the Society for nearly three years now, and have gained a wealth of experience and skills which I don't feel I would have gotten elsewhere. The people here are committed to achieving the goal of a world without dementia. The work is

    Kontras

Lack of management. Too many meetings that accomplish nothing and waste time.

    Rat an das Management

Listen to staff and stop being so risk averse

    Pros

Lots of people (both staff and volunteers) passionate about the cause and genuinely wanting to make a difference.

Salary for most roles is competitive.

    Flexible working is encouraged.

    Kontras

Trying to do too much. Unrealistic about what can be achieved and resource doesn't seem to be taken into account when planning.

Not joined up - teams work in silos without communicating what they are working on with other teams. Unclear who is responsible for different areas of work and can take a lot of time to get things signed off.

Some senior managers seem to have a personal agenda and are unwilling to listen to evidence or feedback.

Change for the sake of change, often not coordinated and several restructures happening at the same time.

Lack of opportunity to progress within the organisation and opportunities to gain experience/develop are unfairly distributed.

Whilst I have listed flexible working is encouraged in pros above, it is not resourced appropriately and technology to enable employees to work remotely effectively and safely hasn't been invested in.

    Rat an das Management

Listen to feedback and be open to change if things aren't working - nothing seems to change despite negative feedback in annual survey.

Role model the values and behaviours you expect others to demonstrate - many senior managers seem to think this doesn't apply to them.

Learn from mistakes - seem to see the same issues in every project/initiative. Lack of planning, not enough time or resource, pointless meetings, unrealistic expectations etc.

Do more to invest in and develop the talent you have - in the few years I've been here I've seen so many good people leave because of a lack of opportunity to progress and develop internally.

Improve how poor performance is dealt with - often where this occurs it is not tackled appropriately (if at all) causing lots of issues and teams that are very difficult to work with.

    Pros

The people - very friendly and welcoming. The passion and dedication to the cause. Genuine desire to communicate and engage with volunteers and employees. Home working is supported and employees are trusted to do this. Very social. Please note, I was based at Head Office. Good informal development opportunities.

    Kontras

Flexible working for people with family responsibilities is not supported, at least in my directorate. Workload expectations are often unrealistic. Very bureaucratic. Lack of progress opportunities. Change is poorly managed.
